who runs halides without a chiller

I run dual 250's over my 120...had to install a heater to keep things level temp wise. I have not needed to use a fan for my tank, but I have one ready just in case.

Canopy is open and hanging above the tank, allowing for optimum air flow and heat dispersal. Circulation is provided by Tunze Streams and one Panworld pump. The system was designed to use less electricity and minimize heat transfer to the tank. It is also located in my basement.

Is this something that can easily be done with lots of fans? Or not so much?

Depends on ambient temperature amoung other things. I don't run a chiller, but my light fixture is suspended over the tank, no canopy. Room is usualy kept at around 74F. Also, I run the lights at night, when it's "cooler".

my tank is in my basement and I don;t have a canopy...3x250 halides over display, 1x250 over prop tank. fan only comes on during the hottest days.

i do, but get a good 2 degree swing in the summer even with AC, fans and a basement sump. in the winter temp is rock steady.

instead of a chiller, consider getting lumenbright reflectors. you run them about 12"-14" above the surface of the water.

Have a closed canopy on top of the tank with 4 T-5's and 2 250watt DE MH. I run 2 72mm computer fans. They are pretty quite. No chiller.

jdg hit it on the head.. There are so many factors that will effect the way the tank reacts in every ones situation

Placement in the house like in cool basements or in hotter rooms.
Closed canopies with the lights inside or lights units above the tanks with open air flow designs.
Area in the house with dead air flow or in the middle of 2 adjacent air conditioning vents...
Sump in the stand holding in heat or is it in another room cooling tanks temps down also....

Hard to say if your tank will or will not need a chiller till it up and running. Some can run them and keep it cool. Some need a fan or two and then some need to add a chiller.

I have pulled it off with a canopy. Had 3 fans blowing in to the canopy across the water, with one fan in the sump. 125 with 2 400's and 1 250.

Did hae 5+ gallons evap though.

I have 2-400W MH, 2 110W VHOs and 4 24W T5s in a canopy. no chiller, 2 Icecap fans in the hood and a 6" fan in the sump. Temp is stable at 77-79 degrees. I evap a lot though.

Where do you live? If you live somewhere where its cool and there is not a lot of temp fluctuations then you can get by with no chiller. Here in cali its gets mofo hot.

2x250W MH and 2x54W T5 in a canopy and no chiller. Do have a fan in the basement blowing air up though ducting to the canopy on the same timer as the MH and a couple of small muffin fans over the sump on a controller.

As house has central air, more often see the heater on than the fans and still evap 1-2g/day.

I live in California so it gets hot here. During the summer I keep my ac on at a constant 77 degrees. Hmm maybe I should go with T5HO.

I have min in an enclosed fixture (Hamilton) and have no heat issues. Temp might get to 80F in the summer.

Hey everyone -

Though I would chime in... I have 4 400w halides above my tank that are suspended open to the amibient air without a chiller on the system currently and room temp never goes above 80* even in the noon hours. I have roughly 6" air space between the bottom of the hood and the top of the tank and realisticly more around 12" or so from the bulb to the water as they are in lumineric hoods that are a DYI project I did.

:wavehand:

No chiller but during the summer months I have hous AC at 79. Besides that I have a 5 fan Profilux blowing across in between the tank and lights. Lights are 2-400w halides.

I use 4- 3" fans in my canopy that are on the timer with the halides and 3- 3" fans always on in the sump.

keeps me at about 79.6

2-250 watts on a 58g tank
