Who uses GFO?

I hear a lot about GFO and the benefits of it. What is your experience since running a GFO reactor or just media? And are there any disadvantages?

Thanks for the link. I just read through the thread. I am seriously considering setting up a GFO reactor. I have a lot of clams though and SPS dominate tank ,I would be curious to know the effects on some of the reef tanks out there. Are there any side effects I should be aware of? If PO4 drops too fast will it stress my corals and clams? What should I watch for if the levels are dropping too fast?

I just started using it and here is an actual excerpt from a friend that came over to my house after having it on at half the recommended dosage for only a couple of days. I have an SPS dominated tank as well. Start at half dosage and work your way up over the course of 2 weeks or so until you reach the full recommended dosage.

Your tank is really starting to shape up! You look at it everyday so it may be hard to tell, but that algae is really going away pretty quickly…whatever your doing, keep doing it.

I use GFO, but only as necessary. I haven't used it in over two years. I use it as an emergency backup, and keep things maintained with water changes.

I use it, have used RowaPhos, Phosban or PURA in the past, now I'm using chemi-pure elite... great stuff.

I was using it, worked great. I switched over to chaeto in the sump (chaeto is a lot cheaper than GFO, helps balance overnight pH if lit off-cycle, and is a nice home for 'pods).

If I ever get a major algae bloom, I'll jump back on the GFO bandwagon; it's one of the rare 'miracle products' that actually does what it says it will.

Thanks the more I read the more it sounds like a good thing. I just want to make sure it won't effect my clams 3 of which are very large ,gigas and squams are about 13" or more. Also have several other clams but the 3 big ones are my babies I have watched them grow. My tank was a transfer from a 180 to the 300 completed in March. Recently I've got a few patches of HA mind you they are small but want to get it under control before it gets out of hand, I do 70 gal. water changes every week. The tank looks great other than the 5 very small patches of HA.

Waiting for new test kit to come in, the one I had was out dated. should be in soon.
I want to see what my levels are before I do any thing.
