Who uses ozone?

The ball valve connects to the venturi via the black line. The white tubing goes to my ozonizer output. I just let the one pump suck the ozone basically continuously at a constant low level. I don't run it high enough to really impact my ORP, so don't worry about it.

This is the result. You can see the little mountains of skimmate sludge in the cup.

Uhm, yeah, maybe. It's more stable than the beckett for sure. It probably performs in the same class if not better. course it's much, much wider than my beckett was and about 4x the price.....my beckett only had a 6" chamber....you can't really compare it to a 12" chamber ya know? It for sure outperfoms the 8x36" GEO I had, so I figure even though it's considerably shorter, it is wider, but over all the reaction chamber size is a wash between it and the GEO. The difference is probably the pumps...the eheims are a much, much better performer than the Sedras (course that prolly doesn't surprise anyone).

Thanks i was just looking to get something a little more forgiving on the electric bill. I run my Aerofoamer 830 with the Iwaki 70 at 345W, the AP702 only use 80W:eek2:
 
After running ozone for a month or so I have a couple questions..

1. The air dryer is a PITA. Hard to believe the beads need recharging as much as they do. How many people DIY larger ones?

2. I wonder about swings in ORP and what kind of effect this can have if any. I.e. Running ozone for a couple weeks (w/ an ORP around 400) then not running it and letting it drop.

3. How often are people calibrating and cleaning their probes?
 
About cleaning probes..

I've done it twice this week by soaking it in vinegar and RO and it's changed my reading fairly drastically each time. Guess it's a bit of risk to trust your monitor's reading.

You can just put them in the microwave for ten minutes and take them out to cool and put them back .
 
That swing that happens when you soak the probe in vinegar has me totally freaked out. What use is a monitor (controlling a deadly gas) that changes 75 - 100 points ever time you clean the probe!!!

I love the effect ozone has on my water quality, but I can't believe how hit-and-miss the sensors are.

Thanks I just figured that out today. Still plan on building a bigger air dryer. The microwave trick does make it a good deal less painstaking.

Still wish I knew why my reading changes so much after cleaning the probe. Even if it's not dirty. Would like to trust what it's giving me.

Thank you! That's what I'm saying. Mine changes about that much each time as well.
 
you shouldnt clean the prbes so often. it takes awhile for orp probes to settle in. I use two for the satisfaction of knowing if they are in line or not. if one goes off I clean both. once you have them for awhile you can start to realize why the orp changes, disturburces, skimmer needs cleaning, something like a snail died etc.

as far as the beeds, yes, bif PIA. are you using an air pump? if so is your pump running even though your ozone isnt. bought the top of the line and they should have, and dont, have a place for the pump to plug in to prevent the pump from running for nothing.
 
I quit using the air dryer beads after about 3 days. Mine needed to be recharged each day and that was with the ozonizer on the same x-10 module as the air pump so the air pump only ran when the ozone was on.

Honestly, I don't see much use in the beads anyways. I have my ozonizer running at about 10% on a controller to keep ORP around 365-375. My unit has no problem keeping these levels while only running at 10% without the air dryer. Of course, when I feed or mess with the tank the orp will drop a bit and take an hour or 2 to get back up but I don't worry about it. The only reason I could see for needing the dryer beads is if your ozonizer can't keep up without the beads. Then the beads may help to get your ozonizer to produce more ozone.
 
I guess I am going to revive this great thread :)

If the ORP probes are not that accurate could one not use a controller and just run the smallest Red Sea unit (50mg/hr) for a few hours a day at 10%, and forgo the probe?? on a 100G tank?

Just a thought?

Since this has been revived, I will make a comment about what I now believe is often a possible misconception about the effect of feeding ozone into a skimmer.

It is often stated that by feeding ozone the skimmate gets thicker. It does, but after using ozone for a couple of years and played around with it to adjust skimmate, I believe it is for another reason that the skimmate gets thicker and starts to clump.

I have increased the size of my skimmer and when I feed ozone the skimmate does get drier and thicker. But, I can get the exact same results by restricting and reducing the skimmer air flow into the venturi. When I hook up the venturi to the ozone, the air flow is restricted more and the air flow is reduced in the same manner as it pulls air through the ozonator and dryer. I no longer believe the thickened skimmate is the result of the O3 reaction but simply results of the reduced air flow when you hook up the ozone to the ejector.

Ozone does clarify the water but I don't believe it has any real affect of thickening skimmate as a lot of people believe. The skimmate does gets thicker, but I believe it is really caused by slightly reduced air flow which makes the skimmate less wet, and not any reaction with the ozone. It is easy enough to test by belief by simply removing the ozone line and restricting the air flow to the venturi to be the same as the pressure drop when feeding ozone.

A negative about feeding ozone into the inlet of a pinwheel pump is the pinwheel plastic breaksdown and reduces the impellor life. The little pins start to break off in about 6 months.
 
Alright, So I am going to get just the 50mg/hr ozone generator and run it 2 times a day for about an hour each time at 10% and we will see how the water looks :)

I will skip the controller and monitor as by reading this that without constant cleaning the readings are not accurate anyways, and with such a small amount of ozone there is no way I can overdose a 150G total volume tank..
