who's gonna have the better tank phong

well now that I'm actively buying parts to have my 180 set up by this summer. And i know phong is setting up a tank with similar water size i just wanted to see what his plans were for his tank.

first off mine is 180 gallons 4ft by 3 ft by 2ft. corner overflow. i will be making this dual overflows with two 1 1/2 in exits and two 1 in returns. I'm going to build my own stand that will 42 in high that can open from 3 sides.
i currently have about 150lbs of well established live rock and am looking for more. i want about 200lbs totall.
3in sand.

i will be building my own sump. i havn't decide on the final layout but i t will be about 36" by 30" by 18". i do know that i want enough room for a fuge and frag grow out area.

i will build an auto top off with about 10 gal in reserve.

mag 12 return.

coralife 500 calcium reactor with co2 regulator and tank from reegeek.

asm g4x skimmer

2 250 lumenarc3 MH with reflux 10k bulbs

6 54watt T-5 supplaments.

aqua controller 3

2 vortec pumps with battery backup and controller (when it comes out)
3 250 watt jager heaters

i'm hoping to have this put together by july and up and runing by august.

i'd like to hear opinions and especially what your plans are for your tank phong.

Chris

hehehe :D ..You win.. You set up for SPS. Mine is for fish and softy. Mine will be very simple.

Tank is 54x30x30 - 210G. Dual overflows but I will remove one. 1.5" drain hole.
Stand: 55Lx30Wx40H - I will build mine also (wish me luck :D)
Rock: I have about 100-120LBS. I will add couple more big pieces if I can find them for a good price. I don't like too many rocks. I have about 60lbs in my 100G now.
Sump: 42x18x18
Return pump: mag 18 hook up to 1" and 3/4" Sea Swirl
PH: 2x6000 with multicontroller (might have to upgrade to 6100)
Skimmer: ER CS8-2
Lighting: 2x250W lumenarc 3 with 12K reeflux bulbs. I have 2xT5 but I might not use them.
Heater: Just 1x250W (mag pump will help with the heat :D)
Call me crazy but I like to topoff manually. I have a nice topoff device for a year and never set it up :D .. For some reasons, I afraid thing will go wrong when you depend on it too much. No calcium reactor since this is only softy tank with a lot of fish :D...
When I have some $, I will get an ACjr to control the light, heater, fans and monitor Ph.

Goal: Finish the stand before the end of May. Set it up and transfer stuff from my 100G in May/June. Everything should be done before the end of June. After that go buy a bigger tank and restart everything  ..

Sounds like half the people on here including me. I upgraded three times in the last two years. My wife hates me.

we had at least 1 upgrade that never saw water before the next one was bought and that project started.. so yea, I am right there with ya :D. Luckily my wife is as into the hobby now as I am (as anyone we have visited to trade frags will attest to, including any LFS with decent coral selections :D). So I am given a modest amount of leeway in terms of tank and equipment expenses and time getting them setup.

Not yet lapson. It should ship this week, but the way it looks it won't make it here before this coming weekend. So another 2 weeks before we get it up and running on our system :)

I am now considering changing out our calcium reactor.. maybe for a Shuran or a custom one from Scott.

I did finally get the aquacontroller all set up on the tank.. so now the heaters, cooler, lights, etc are controlled by the AC JR (that may change in the future also.. I know someone building a custom controller that interests me :), but no idea on the $$ yet, so it may not be an option :(.

I started on a FW 1g tank 4yrs ago, 6mo after upgraded to 20g then 39g, then move to SW 90g , and finally 375g.

My sister in law gave me a 29G 2 years ago because she can't even keep goldfish alive for more than 2 months. Cost me over $1000 to covert it to saltwater tank. 3 months later, that thing was way over stock. Bought me a brand new 100G and after 6 months the thing was fully stock. I was bored so I resetup the 29G to try out SPS. Once again I stocked that thing within 3 months. I couldn't keep the temp down in that tank because of the MH and the return pump. I couldn't install the chiller because the powerline can't support it. So what do I do?? Upgrade :D .. I bought a 50G tank from Petco and set that up. I lost all the coral that was in my 29G so I had to buy them again. My 50G is full now. Actually it has too many stuff in there :D .. It will be fun setting up my new 210G :) ..

due to circumstance this will be my first upgrade in my short 2 1/2 year time in the hobby so the wife has given me a little spending room. (thankfully) she wants this to be my second to last upgrade, ha i can see going bigger 3 more times.
and it has helped that she has started to take notice of the hobby and enjoys things that are beautiful.

my plan. stand by end of may, sump by end of june. all the equipment by july. then have it wet by august. and no plans for another upgrade in the future.

I ususally just wait til she goes to visit her mom and then when she gets back....POW! new tank

edit:thats what I did with my last motorcycle too:lol:

don't get me started on upgrades that never see water... nor plumbing, hehe... =)

but both your tanks sound insanely cool! can't wait =)

Chris - have you considered an Eheim 1260 or Eheim 1262? Monstrous pump - this thing can move a serious amount of water.

It's funny how the trend is building 42" high stands - mine is about that height and I love it - nothing beats looking straight into a tank vs. bending down.

Sorry to have missed you on the tank tour, anytime you are up in San Francisco let me know if you want to check out my forever long project. I think Marc (Melev) has a jump on me for the woodwork though.

i thought i'm taking my time since i got my tank and stand at xmas time.i had mine running since last week of feb.i finally got the aquascaping done on satureday.that tonga shelp make my skimmer go crazy.now is finally settle done.now i can work on stocking my tank and Auto water changing system.gl

I didn't know that was a trend. Everyone that comes and sees my tank always says I am dumb for having my tank so high. I don't care. I love having drawers under my tank and height for a propper skimmer.

Not at all. Everyone is surprised when I tell them the tank is only a 120g tank - people seem to think it's a 150g

our stand is that high also. My wife can sit on a high chair (bar stool type) and look confortably across the aquascape. That height is great :)

i love the way a high tank looks, better viewing for me (i'm 6'4") and the kids wont be able to reach the vortecs.
