whos using T5 HOs?

I'm thinking of going with t-5s over a 180g I have if it does not sell. I was planning on running two 72" VHO super actinics and 8 x 39w t-5s.

Do you think this would be enough or would I be better off going with all 80w t-5s.

Please keep in mind that it is an Oceanic tank with an approximately 20" glass center brace.

Hello, I have a 150 gal tank. I use 6x 80 watt t5s brand JBL (4x 15 000k, 2x actinic) with independent parabolic reflectors, 3 of these bulbs are powered by icecap, the rest by cheap ballast. My cannopy doesn´t have ventilation and I manually dose additives.

Have always used the JBL t5s, they are german but I can´t compare to anything else because they are the only brand I´ve used.

I wouldn´t say growth is faster than MH, At most it would be equal.
Coloration is not that great, after only 7 months of use on the bulbs, the polyps on the SPS are starting to brown out in some colonies: superman, blue w blue polyp monti cap, monti verrucosa, german blue polyp acro.

Zoos don´t open that big, and the growth and color on them is noticeable low compared to MH tanks where zoos color up nicely and grow like weed.

All of this made me want to change to MH but the setup I wanted was quite expensive.

Many people suggested I needed to change to a better brand and better bulb combination, that´s why I´m getting 3x ATI blue plus, 2x ATI aquablue, 1x KZ fiji purple. And modify the canopy to add vents.

I´ll let you know about the change in coloration and growth, and how many months the new brand lasts with ventilation, as I will be documenting that. I think everything will be better but I don´t think the zoos will improve much.

Under these jbl bulbs, even when new, my green monti cap looks yellowish:

Is that a par meter or lux meter? The reading looks like 1098 to me. If it is a par reading, then that is very high to me. Could you tell us more about the par or lux measurement around the tank under 6 x 80w T5 ?

Its a lux meter, from what I understand it says nothing. The reading was taken at about 12" under the lights.

i have a 65g 36 x 18 x 24 and am sick of halides and their heat, how many bulbs would i need for my sps

I keep SPS very high in a 50g with 4xt5ho.

If you get a good fixture - powermodule, sunpower, tek, aquatinics - you can go with 5, 6, or 8 bulbs if you are careful.

Remember that you may have more watts with MH, but t5ho being long tubs with long reflectors, your sps will receive intense light in areas that were shaded with MH. A careful light acclimation period of a couple weeks will probably be needed.

i recently jumped off the halide ship on the t5 boat. I got rid of my 2-250w w/ 4 54w t5 for an 8 bulb tek light. The difference is huge. Coloration is great, and i have already noticed growth in the week i have had it up that was not there. I will never run halides again (well, probably not).

i have a 6 bulb sunpower fixture anyone know how deep of a tank i can do to grow sps at the bottom?

i wish i had a foot print wide enough for T5. I don't really want to try the 24" as I have heard that their light output is not very good compared to a 36".

I would go for the 8 bulb as it is 17.5" and your tank with the bracing is probably 18.5".

Sonny uses a 7 bulb Constellation on his tank. if you are looking for color similar to his, it would be nice to be able to run his bulb combination.

How many T5 bulbs would you do over a 30 breeder?

6 would be best, give you the most coverage front/back and bulb mixing ability.

Qustion in reference to the 55Gallon Setup

Qustion in reference to the 55Gallon Setup

I saw this question answered by SunnyX

about a month ago I changed from PC lighting to T-5 lighting for my 55g. I had the T-5 light about 5 inches off the water, and some of the corals didn't seem to like it and seemed to be burned. Now I have it about 10 inches off the water. It's looking better, but not the colors I would like. My acro seem to be sheading. My orange montipora is a faded orange. Any thoughts/reason why? My light order is: ATI Blue Plus ATI Aquablue UV Lighting 75/25 ATI Blue Plus My blue lighting goes on 1 hour before and after my daylights. The daylights are on for 8 hours.

Sonny- I saw your response and i am about to do the same except go from 175w 14K MH and 2 420nm 65W pc's

to an Icecap 660 4X54 in a canopy.

Doy you think that will be enough light?
Should i try to keep the PC's in the canopy as well?

Matthew

Hello,

Yes, the pics were taken under the same combo although a couple white bulbs were off in a couple pics.
