Why aren't my corals colorful?

I found something called phos-x. It states that it traps phosphate. Phos-X

Do you know if this works? I thought I could use it at the moment while I shop for a reactor.

1. Based on those numbers, I wouldn't trust that test kit. AP is not a "high end" kit. The only kits I use are Salifert or Hach. Red Sea makes a good Phosphate kit. Here's a quote on phosphate levels:

"The optimal phosphate level, especially for reef tanks, is an immeasurable one, or zero, with 0.05 ppm-mg/l being acceptable, and an upper level of 0.1 ppm cited as well. Having a good, reliable phosphate test kit is important. FINS recommends Hach and LaMotte brands as being good choices. Sailfert seems to have a good, precise phosphate test as well, but from our understanding the Sea Chem scale measures too high."

I, personlly, think .05 is waay to high...but if the upper end they suggest is .1 ppm and you're reading 1.25 ppm, that's 12 times higher...Your corals would be dead.

2. I've got a used Phosban reactor collecting dust if you want it....$15.

3. I don't know anything about Phos-X and likely wouldn't buy it based on who the manufacturer is (that's my opinion). I only use Phosban, Salifert's media (forgot the name) or ROWAphos.

BTW, skimmer are always highly overrated. The number they put on the box is really no indication of the quality of a skimmer. What brand/type of skimmer are you using?

I used to have a Red Sea Berlin skimmer that was "rated" for 120 gallons. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't put that thing on a 30 gallon tank.

SPS, will turn brown If the colony or frag. already aclimated to a higher lighting . Example ,400 w to 175w, it will take weeks even months before you see any any changes, also your water quality play significant role just the same as lighting. Lighting, good water quality, low in nutrients, water movement, stable temp. = Colorful SPS.....;)

mhurley - it's an Aqua C Remora w/ Mag 3. If I could run it more often, believe me I would. Hopefully the phosban reactor will help my corals.

I just got my TDS meter today, and my RODI water is at 0ppm. That's right, nothing. I made sure it was working by testing tap water (which definately was NOT zero).

The media for the phosban reactor is currently shipping. Thanks again Mike for the nice reactor. You have an awesome tank!
