why black for backround

just wondering why black seams to be the choice for the back on most tanks and is this for reef tanks and fowlr also give me your opion

I think that it is all personal preference but it may also add depth to the tank. I wouldn't know though because I have a blue background. HTH, Tim

I like a solid background to hide all the wires and junk.
I prefer black, because to me it's less distracting.
But right now there's so much coraline you almost can't tell what color the background is anyway!

I used to like black but I am all for dark royal blue.

Black looks lifeless to me blue makes it look sparklin clean.

Gives the tank a better look. Black looks good also if you have bright colored fish because they stand out a little better.

Here is my blue back if you all don't mind ;)

As you can see above on clkwrk 's tank. The blue is very pretty, but it takes the color away from everything else. IMO. That's why I like black better. But as davocean said, coraline covers most of my back glass.

IMo it doesn't take away from the colors but it doesn't provide that contrast between the 2 .

I have had blue on the back of all of my tanks, but I am doing a very dark charcoal color on my tank I am in the process of setting up.

The black does make the colors "pop" a little more, but I also noticed the water looks clearer with a black back. I am sure this is an optical illusion, but it works for me.

Most of the LFS around here have black on the backs of their tanks and I really like the look.

dont know if its true was told that some people like black because its a calmer color for the fish

like the black back for similar reasons as above, seems to focus on the colors of the corals, fish, etc. seemed to give more depth for me than the blue backs, but seems a matter of personal prefernce more than anything.

beautiful tank pics clkwrk!! wondering how do you keep all the sides, including the back, clean? scrape constantly? i never understand how people clean the back up so good, i always have problems cleaning coralline around the back area..

Thanks ! I clean the back every few months. But having 1250watts of halides over the tank helps out also . I also have a 300+ army of snails and a nutrient poor enviroment.

Black is great for bringing out colours in the tank, a dark blue would be fine too.
The problem with lighter blues is that they tend to "wash" out some colours eg blue tangs, chromis etc.
eg clkwrk's tank. The PBT when swimming against the blue background would not seem as vibrant c/w a black one imo.

IMO coraline looks bad growing on a blue back, I cant keep the back of my tank clean so I have black, its also matches my overflow, and it provides more contrast when its not covered in coraline...
