Why can't I take a good Picture?

I have a Nikon D50

This Pic was taken with a 18-55mm lens.

It's a good thing I am not using film. Because it took about 110 shots to even get this.

Do I need a Macro?

Do I need Glasses?

Tell me the first 2 things you would do to improve on this Pic

Thanks

Perpendicular to the glass like edwing said, and a faster shutter speed. It looks like the Flowerpot is blurred because it's moving while the picture was being taken. A faster shutter speed would freeze the movement better. The downside of using a fast shutter speed is the depth of field will be narrow/shallow. You can get the best of both worlds (fast shutter speed and good depth of field) by using a flash... and the downside of using a flash is it sometimes makes the colors look unnatural. Flowerpots usually look good with a flash though.
