Why cheato

I understand the whole poor student thing...just finished a few years ago myself. My biggest thing about the daily water changes it that it is not that far off from doing a large monthly one. I too was thinking of that article, but alas I had the wrong %in mind. My mistake. This is my thought. If you start from the beginning with daily water changes those nitrates, phosphates etc... do not have time to build up over a month's time. If I could draw a graph in this thread I would :). Still, the stability of it to me makes it very worth while. I agree that it sounds like a hassel but to me it is easier than doing a 30%on my main display, but of course that is not a nano tank. It simply got rid of the bucket brigae. A 30% change on a 10g isn't that much at all.

However, keeping with the whole algae thread. The thing with caulerpa is that while it can go sexual it has an arousal phrase (for lack of a better term) that is easy to detect. If you prune it back at that moment it will not finish its cycle and thus your tank will not be adversely effected. I have been running Caulerpa for 2 years and have never had a problem. Also, regular pruning (which would have to be done in a nano) seems to deter it from going sexual. The fast growth can be a pain, but remember in order to grow fast it must yank the stuff out of the water fast. I hope my logic makes since here. There is an old article in RK about this exact event that I think you need to read before you get cheato. At least this way you will be fully informed.

Later, and happy reefing.

I won't get into the math detail because it's listed in that article, but the idea is, if you do a 30% water change as the end of the month, you can expect a 30% reduction in nitrates, and a 30% increase in trace elements, however, doing daily water changes or even weekly as a matter of fact will only yield in a 15%-20% change. Again, I'm not trying to be specific w/ the numbers, but I'm just trying to point out that doing water changes on a daily basis will not have the same impact as a large water change at the end of the month.

Okay, I know we are not being specific, but in the interest of science I think if we are going to reference an article we should at least present it correctly. Both of us were a little off on the numbers. Just for clarity. According to table 1 in the article below a 1% wc done 30X removes 26% of impurities over the course of 1 month vs a 30% which removes 30% of impurities. I personally feel that that 4% is worthwile to give up for the stability of it. Just an opinion. Below is the link that the two of us are referencing. Please don't be offended by this XeniaMania. I am not trying to start a fight. I just want to make sure the advice/opinion is as accurate as possible.
