Why dip a clam?

Hello,
I read that you suggest to dip a clam in freshwater.
Can you please guys tell me why is suggest to do this?
Is this suggested against parasits?if so which ones?

for PM aka pinched mantle.. its a killer.. lost my clams to it..

I don't recommend doing a FWD without cause. I believe it should only be done if it exhibits signs of PM.

so it's a suggested pratique do to just in case you've seen the sign of PM and not something it's suggested to do with all new Tridacnas

I know a lot of lfs and online stores will dip the clams they get when they get them in just in case *shrug*
