Why do people use monster sized return pumps?

2. i was not talking about a closed loop (sump included) in your tank. Your tank Is a closed loop. you faucet IS an open loop. Hard as it may be to believe the word closed loop has meaning before aquariums came along.

On a side note what prompted you to start this thread? You came into your first post like you were in a fight with someone and have come off very confrontational the whole time. Why start a thread and when some one responds act like they just told you Santa isn't real

I also tend to think the thread has no point.. there are plenty of threads on sump flow and its generally accepted slow is good. But everyone does what works for them, with the equipment they have. I've had a 8gal tank up to a 40 and I try to use the same stuff for everything.

Is there a reason why people use 3 commas instead of three periods? Are you not meaning to type an ellipsis? JW, I've seen it quite a bit on forums...

just telling me books doesn't help anything. Ocean water has a very high turn over yet bacteria still seem to do just fine. Skimmers pull a set amount of water so sump flow wont change that. I'm not trying to say that you need a crazy high flow. The middle path is usually the best.

ok firebirddude, I'm not interested in arguing, but I just took my return pump volume down via ball valve and it can't keep up with my drain. How could a smaller return pump work in what I want to achieve? I drain more water than my 9.5 can return...I would need bigger than a 9.5 to keep up with the natural gravity drain. I might be missing something, but this is my first reef ready tank, and I used the equipment that I had on hand. Enlighten me please on where I am not getting it....

Rather than a ball-valve on your drain which is just a clog waiting to happen, you might want to submerge the end of your drain line below the water level of your sump -- this will help to slow the flow without restricting it, and it will also quiet it down.

I run a mag 24 on a 65. It feeds my ATS, Chiller, and a reactor from time to time. It may be alot of flow but, I go with the whole idea of the more flow the more detrius that I catch in the sponge on my return drain. I have alot of live rock in my dt, more than my sump. I don't use a skimmer, so there is no point worrying about how much passes by it. To me, and I am no pro, but you are talking about 6 of one and a half dozen of the other. I have healthy fish and corals, if I slow down my pump, how much healthier can they be?
