Jim_S Timo Boll Feb 15, 2007 #3 2 main reasons. Acrylic skimmers have residual oils left over from production that must be broken down before the skimmer can devlope a proper slime coat. The Second reason is the slime coat. This coating on this inside of the skimmer must develope before the skimmer will function properly. HTH Jim
