Why do things go wrong w/ tanks on vacations?

Is there a "law" out there to explain this?

I came home from 1 evening out of town to find my 40g of my 55g QT tank on the livingroom floor. I don't get it... not a thing went wrong the other 5 weeks it's been running =/

my theory is your fish get mad b/c you didn't get that bigger and badder tank so they go and sabotage the system.

knock on wood I have gotten through week long vacations at various times without a problem but I know several people who litteraly gave up fresh or saltwater after a vacation flood. Murphy's law must have a subset for aquariums. Anything that can go wrong will do so while on vacation (or at least when you have no water ready for a water change).

Seriously, sorry to hear about that. Having kids and dogs, I decided no exposed plumbing would be a part of my tanks. I have a HOB filter that is blocked from prying hands and it still scares me.

I did get a sand sifting starfish and, first thing, it pushed a rusty wire out of the sand in my aquarium. Aparently a spring had broken on a door (part of a childproof latch) and launched the spring straight up and then into the aquarium, past my lights. It was a one in a million shot but it made it and was probably the cause of some losses I had attributed to bad water. Thank goodness for the starfish.

I had skimmer problems while vacationing in Florida at the beginning of an 11 day of fun in the sun. My neighbor was taking care of the tank. I gave her the number to my lfs guy prior to leaving and told him she would call if there were problems. Glad I did that as he walked her thru getting it up and running again. She was a nervous wreck!

looks like the tube to the UV came loose from the hose barb... I lost the powder blue and put the blue tang in my small QT tank and am crossing my fingers he pulls through. I didn't have 40g of water on hand to fill the tnak back up. bleh.

AAAHH don't tellme this stuff.LOL I have been sooo worried because the wife and I are going on a cruise for 1 week on june 2nd and that is all that's running through my mind.

Since I started reefkeeping, I haven't gone on vacation. JK. Have a fellow reefer (good friend) come by and check on the tank for you. Thats what I do when I go away.

yes... have a REEFER take care of your tank. My buddy and I normally do this, but we figured 1 night out of town I would have been fine.

Here's my non-reefer tank babysitting stories;
- We fed them crickets! (they also fed them bread)
- I understand you preportioned all the food out but the fish looked hungry so we fed them more (literally the rest of food block)
- The coral fell down so I put it back on its ledge, but accidentally hit that other rock there and then those 3 rocks moved so i tried to put them back (literally everything was in a new spot - and corals on top of each other)
- Never had an ich outbreak... in 1 week everyone had ich. I don't know how this happened.

It's that Murphy bastard... I wish something could have gone wrong with him before he made his name.

Twice I have gone on vacation and both times lost power...the first time the gfi outlet blew and I didn't get a call from the houssitter for 2 days. She finally said when I called, "the tank isn't making any noise, should I be worried?"

The second time Florida Power & Light had a massive power outage in South Florida.

Needless to say, I am purchasing a whole house generator prior to my next vacation!

I'm on a farm with livestock. There is no end to what can go wrong. When my wife and I have to be gone I arrange for a friend that is farm savy to come stay at our place to do barn chores and keep an eye on the fences. I've trained him in basic aquarium maintenance and, most importantly, he always has a number to reach me so I can talk him through anything he isn't familiar with.

That said, I once had to go for a week long conference/workshop in Montana and was away from phones for a good portion of that week as most of the work shops were in a wilderness area. My wife was watching the aquarium. When I got back around phones again I called home. She was in a near panic because the pump on the skimmer wasn't running right.

I told her to look just above the sump where there are two power strip/surge protectors with all the electrical components plugged in. There is a well thought out order to the plugs so that I don't have to think about which one goes to what.

I talked her through unplugging the skimmer, assuming it would be fine for two more days until I got home to check it out. The choice language and banging I heard over the phone was funny, at the time.

When I got home two days later I discovered that she had not only unplugged the skimmer, but also the heater. She said she pulled that plug first, but nothing seemed to happen so she didn't plug it back in. (That's when a bit of training in Buddhist philosophy comes in handy...)

The main tank was at 70 degrees, which is about where the woodstoves were keeping the house during the daytime. I lost a Foxface, a Flame Angel, a Hammer Coral, an Open Brain, most of my snails and hermits and my Emerald Crab. Of course, the water was in terrible shape as she had not removed anything that died and she did manage to get the skimmer unplugged (it only needed to be adjusted!).

Is there a silver lining to every cloud? A hair algae outbreak I had been fighting for two months died off completely, and stayed gone. My False Percula, Lawnmower Blennie and my Psychedelic Mandorin made it just fine, as did the rest of my soft and LPS corals.

The moral: If you are desparate to get rid of hair algae, go away for a week or so. It works.

i left my tank for a year at my parents while i lived in the dorm. no problems. i came home to do a w/c once a month and routine maintance. i lived 3 miles away so it was no big deal. I also had a knee surgery and the tank only received food, top off, and emptying of skimmer cup for about 3 months.

i guess from the sounds of it i shouldn't be in this hobby. i go on at least 2-4 week long vacations a year, and leave the tank to a friend. i have been pretty fortunate and feel very confident in his abilities, but i guess anything can go wrong.

i actually just got back from a 3 day trip to my dad's wedding. the temp was around 94 degrees in town and i hadn't set up the AC yet. i was really worried, but the tank only got up to 81.9 over the weekend.

Just got back from a 4-day vacation starting Thursday... Came home and my tank is 96 degrees.

Thankfully, nothing was dead. But a lot of stuff, especially my serpent star and frogspawn looked like they had seen better days.

After adding about 6 packs of ice to the water the temperature came down and I had a chance to investigate the cause. It seems my timer failed and my lights were stuck on for probably all four days I was gone.

Got lucky this time.

Now reading this post I am starting to get paranoid. I am going on vacation for 5 days this week, and I had a problem a couple weeks ago when my sump overflowed and leaked all over the living room. BUT, since I live on 2nd floor of an apartment, it leaked to the 1st floor through the wall and sw fell on to the 50in plasma of the neighbor below me. I think I need to find a tank sitter now because I will be worried througout the entire trip.

If you had properly appeased the reef god with offerings of your income, you would not have the available funds to go on vacation. This is the reef god's punishment for you not being enough of an addict.
