Why do you use a skimmer?

I use one because I feed heavy and it helps remove the excess.

Is this a joke? It is a protein skimmer? I use mine to remove proteins, however I did once ask it to remove a few hermit crabs but it didn't work.

It is possible for a skimmer to remove some solid items such as flake food or sediments that get captured in the rising bubbles, but that is not a typical use.

I would imagine a mixture of detritus, food, fish poop etc. It removes all of the nastiness that I have to dump from my skimmer cup every week. Come over and have a look/smell and tell me why you wouldn't want that stuff removed from the tank

You dose it with every feed. A skimmer removes everything it can catch in the bubbles, including trace elements.

Excess food...poop...whatever it can pick up. 3 days can produce alot of sludge in my skimmer.

What is your point in this thread?

His point seems to be that protein skimmers do more than just removed dissolved wastes. We filter our water so much that we end up having to put some of that stuff back in. At what point does the bad outweigh the good?

I use one because I read on here they are a good idea.

I feed twice a day, skim 24/7, 10 gallon water change per week.

Nothing has died yet so I'll stick to it
