Why won't you....

Why do some people pass up deals due do the sellers location? "gas money and time" is the answer(i would assume)... It seems like FRAG is kinda split between eastsiders and westsiders... For me i drive all over the valley so to me an hour drive isnt too bad(i can drive ~200 miles and it wasted a quarter of a tank of gas).... now for a $5 frag i can understand, but for the nicer peices and some dry goods it's worth the extra drive IMO... whats you opinion?

If there were to be a "Frag delevery guy" so to say, would people deal with others more?....

I understand this is probally a stupid question, but please do explain the reasoning behind the "it's too far"....

I guess it depends on the amount of free time you have. In my case, I start the j-o-b before daylight, and sometimes don't get done until dark. This means I get to bed pretty early too. I don't have the time to spend a few hours driving, especially if the item I am driving for may be gone by the time I get there. I guess it depends on what it is and how bad I want it.

I am all over 'meet halfway' however, I seem to be the only one. I have actually had people ask me to deliver a free fish, then imply I am unreasonable for not doing so - because it is not them who is far away, it is me.

If I want to buy something, I have to go to the seller's house. If I want to sell something, for some reason I am expected to go to the buyer's house. What is up with that????

I have some people do that to me, they did not feel like coming out to Maricopa but was fine if I went to Phoenix. For me its more its to far and having to head that way for a $10 or so frag, is to much. I have to load up the kids and some times thats a hassle.

I have driven to Sierra Vista to get a chiller and clear out to West Surprise/Sun City etc for frags. I went to New Mexico out east where Jesse lives just to see his tank.

I don't mind driving, but it really depends a lot on what else is going on and what kind of free time I have. Hauling a family along does make it tougher.

What I love are the free fags being given away. People call them out and never show up or show up late. I have better things to do than wait around for people. If you commit to buying something, buy it and make sure you are there on time.

For me, as mentioned, it depends on how much I want it. I don't care if it's an hour drive for a $5 frag, if I want it that bad I will go. If it's something I can wait for, then distance does play a part...

I still can't get over people wanting you to drive free stuff to them. If someone asked me that I would change my mind about giving it to them, even if they decided later that free was worth the drive. The nerve of some people.....

I think people are just impulsive sometimes. I know I can be.

Perhaps it goes something like this:

Internal thought process: "Wow that's a great deal for a nice little frag"

PM sent: "I'll take it, where are you located?"

PM replied: "Maricopa"

Internal thought process: "Wow that's not really a great deal anymore, the pizza guy brings stuff to my house, why can't frag shopping be like that too?"

PM sent: "Hey dude you're kinda far away, could you maybe deliver it like the pizza guy does?"

As others have said, it boils down to money, time and desire. I have spent 30 bucks in gas to get 2 $5 dollar frags before when money wasn't as tight, and other times past up on awesome pieces or equipment because I just can't justify the cost to pick it up. I try to look for a balance somewhere and figure out what works best for both parties. I've offered to pick things up for people or drop stuff off when I'm already nearby or in the area, even if it has nothing to do with me since I'd already be there.

haha the whole reason i started this thread was for the exact reason of people wanting FREE stuff delivered.... It seems the impulse buyers that dont pull through are a major player in this(In my experience)... I know for me personally, if i say "I'll take it", then well.... I will.... If i deciede to back out its always for a legit reason(not always sellers fault), and will try to contact that person ASAP to let him/her know the sitituation so they can pass it on to the next person in line....

Also someone on this fourm(i know who you are because the seller told me), kinda talked smack about me because the seller was holding somthing till i got there the following day and this guy wanted it... Well what this person doesnt understand is that (my)a persons word is good until they blow it one time... then they become flakey buyers....

So in conclusion so far it seems that SOME repeat SOME people will travel for the goods and others just stay quiet..**Hint Hint reply is you dont travel Hint Hint**

I don’t have a problem driving anywhere for corals, but for me it’s always time constraints that limit me now.

My clown fish and purple nem was picked up in the middle of the night in Sierra Vista. It was about 5 years ago when good corals and fish were hard to come across. I found an ad on here for some peppermint shrimp, hawk fish, and a pair of Friedman Pseudochromis. I drove out there on a Sunday afternoon, picked up the fish and some live rock. The guy was tearing down his tank and said the clowns were on hold for someone else. I left my number and told him I just wanted the rest of the live rock when the corals and fish are gone.

Well on Wednesday night of that week I get a phone call at 11pm and wanted to know if I wanted the rest of the fish, shrimp, crabs and snails for $50. I said yea I can get them this weekend. He then told me that tank was sold and gone, the rest of the fish listed were in a 5 gallon bucket. I told him ok ill be there tonight. I drove all the way down there in the middle of the night to get a bucket of 3 fish and bunch of cleanup crew.

When I got there 3 hours later he then informed me that he called the "wrong person". Yep he meant to call some other person and sell it to them. I told him I would take the fish anyways, and he felt so bad he gave them to me for free.

I have also met people in this hobby that are incapable of driving for medical reasons on more then one occasion. I have delivered to them without any problems, but it was more on my schedule.

I really don’t mind because I'm a reef hobbyist and like to look at reef tanks, and by traviling to other peoples houses I get to see what they have created, and sometimes help out with advise or ID a coral/growth. Most of the time I learn something new about different habits and husbandry techniques.

Good topic. It really depends and I appreciate a few topics being brought up.

Topic #1: The no show or late arival. This sux. I really do stick to my word as many of you have experienced. If I sell something at a lower price, but the buyer needs a day or do fr funds, I will hold for them. Or if I say I will be there 7, I'm there at seven, if i start seeing that I might be running a bit behind I will call and say "hey I might be 10 minutes late, sorry." I can't tell you how many times I have people "no show" like text me all day, set up a time and then never show up. Even to the point where they are like I'm leavin in 30 minutes. Never to be heard from again. So much for appreciating eachother time!

A side note to this one, someone promise you a frag or a part (free or not) and fall off the face of the earth. Wow?! What up with that?!

#2 support of the medical challenged! Lol! I am going through a serious time with mulitiple back surgeries and though I have not had anyone actually deliver the frag or equiptnment, it's good to know that people do understand. My wife drives me to and from work. So getting a coral just can't happen. :(

Bites too, I have a whole new tank to fill up! Lol!!!

When it comes to driving when healthy, it really comes down to pricing, demand, and avaialability. I've driven way out to the other side of town for frags, but I've also asked to meet, and presented the idea of "if your out by me" due to my inability to drive now. :(

good question. Bow who delievers Acans and SPS???!?! Lol

Turbo, I am with you on the flakey buyers!!!
Generally not a problem with RC members, but some sometimes it still is.

I had heard that you are in Maricopa once in awhile on the weekends.

Next time you are planning on coming out this way, let me know and I will hook you up with some frags!

I personally have no problem driving anywhere in the valley. Even if my car is a piece of. . .something lol. I have driven to Glendale to pick up some cheato when I first set up my tank (thanks again btw and the heater works great!) to N. Phx for live rock as well as to San Tan Valley to pick up some more live rock and back again a few days later for some free Koi fish that I drove to a friends so they had a good home (That was today, got my first speed award) as well as many other places around the valley. I have also ran numerous errands for a friend that can't drive due to medical issues and have no problem doing so. Now that work is picking up however and I am starting to need to save a bit more I wont make as many trip (well that's the plan at least) but if I find a good deal or something I want/need I have absolutely no problems picking them up almost anywhere around the valley. But if I say ill be somewhere I try and do anything in my power to be their on time. Just common courtesy.

I have to say though, it would be kind of awesome to have someone be a coral delivery guy. haha. Of course I also wish pet stores and salt water stores were 24 hours a day. :D

I like to pick stuff up mostly because I'm curious to see everyone elses set up. I've had the 'can you deliver' with free and other stuff, especially lately as I've been cleaning out my shop and it involves some larger and heavy stuff. My standard answer is $1 a mile round trip as per yahoo maps. People that complain get pointed out that if they want to shell out 40K for a truck and trailer and pay for gas and insurance then they would be able to come get it themselves.
