wierd behavior

one of my occ. clowns lays on the sustrate of hours at a time. always in the same place.it seems fine if you walk up to the tank, because it gets up and swims around with the other clown just fine. also the breathing rate seems very high when it's on the bottom. any ideas??

Is the true perc giving your false a hard time when you aren't looking? Technically you should only mix like species

My black clown used to do that. It was only at night and I suspected he was just "hosting" the substrate.

but this behavior isn't just at night...it is for several hours during the day...that doesn't seem normal to me

Nothing they do seems normal to me. Just keep a close eye on it. They have so many quirks.
