wife not happy

Wife witness the amount of waste water put out by the RO unit. I told her that making clean water creates a lot of waste water which I put down the drain. She wants me to somehow recycle this water. She mentioned the washer but that would be a pain to do. Yes it's a darn shame that all that water goes to waste but I'm not all that motivated to do anything except write this post :spin1:

But seriously, is there a membrane that is more efficient? Is it going to cost me 5 times as much as the cheap ones I buy now?

I've heard of RO/DI units that recycle the water as it's producing RODI water, the recycling is built in the unit to recycle it as it processes it. I don't know how it works, but I have seen some discussion on here about it. I agree it should be a concern because water waste is a huge issue in this world.

But, I agree that cost can be prohibitive. My RO system is plumbed into my drain line. So I don't see how much waste is generated. I have noticed since getting the aquarium, our water bill has gone up by $5.00 to $10 a month. I'm assuming it's from the water water from the RO Unit.

you can save the water to water plants with or give to dogs or cats. you can use it to water garden or plants in plant bed. Some run a 55g barrel to hold the waste water for outdoor use.

Was kidding with the pet thing, but the homeless are always thirsty, they can get it.

Its really not that difficult to recycle it :D. Here is a thread on RO Waste Water Uses. Is the filter in the same room as the washing machine? If so its as simple as getting a long enough line to run into the washer. Or you can setup a system similar to a rain barrel for watering the garden except filled with waste RO water.

Unless you have your own private water system like a well or cistern you're paying for the water. Might as well put as much of it to use as possible. :D

Why cant you give it to your pets. Do you let your pets drink the water from the tap. I bet the waste water from the RO DI unit is better than out of the tap.

I water the garden and fill up my outside fish pond with my waste water.

Nope. For me and the mutts...

You could plumb it to your toilet tank, but you would need a bypass in case it is full. If you really wanted to go all out, you could have a reservoir just for waste water and only fill the toilet with it. Again, you would need an easy valve to throw on when you run out of waste water.

I'll just assume you're trolling now.

Tap is fine in most areas, and the waste water from RO units might be better than straight tap since it goes through sediment and carbon filters before getting rejected by the membrane, but it's impossible to know without testing. Waste water is concentrated impurities after some filtering, you know? Hard to tell.

I've read that the TDS of your waste water is around 125% of your tap water TDS reading. The impurities that your RO unit removes are flushed out with the waste water. So, if your TDS of your tap is 100, then the waste water will be 125. Maybe not an issue if the TDS of your tap is relatively low, but mine is between 465-490. I have a drinking water attachment on my RO/DI unit, so the cats get that water.

I think the cheapest way out for you is the rain barrel or a drip line to the flower garden...
Most other methods require 2 membranes or a booster pump.
