Wild parrot fish.

Wel I had a wild parrot fish given to me at the beach. This guy caught it with a really small hook and he asked me if I wanted it. It was very beautiful so I said yes. It's like a rainbow of colors and like to hide in the sand. It's only probably 3 inches long and is in a 20 gallon tank with just it in it. Does anybody know anything about these fish.

As far as I know parrotfish don't bury themselves in the sand, so I don't think it's a parrotfish.

+1 what kind of tank do you have this wild caught fish in and with what? Sounds like a recipe for disaster. You need to post a pic. But since I'm sure wherever you live they don't collect fish for the saltwater trade I'm sure your tank will be far too small long term. Post a picture!

The original post says if is in a 20 gallon tank by itself.

Ok well the fish was large enough already to chase and bit the bait that was being used and was hooked so that fish won't last but a min long term in a 20g

A number of parrot species do bury themselves, especially when young, including some Western Atlantic/Caribbean species.

We will need a clear photo to give you much decent information. A 20 will be much to cramped for even the smallest parrot species (if it isn't already- I know hes 3" but they take a lot of room). Some are straight algae eaters and rarely bother coral, others will munch through about anything stony. Pics will help.

Really? I've never read that. Is it genus specific? Parrots are so famous for sleeping in those mucus cocoons I thought all of them did it.
Are there wrasses that bury in sand as juvi's but not adults? I've never heard of that before either :o

Most parrotfish get like 3 feet long... there are a few pacific ones that stay smaller like Scarus Quoyi but I believe all the Carribbean ones get huge. I would keep it for a couple weeks then release it. FYI I dont know, but you might check into fisheries regulations, a lot of times it's illegal to catch and keep juvenile fishes...

Most young parrotfish that I have seen are striped longitudinally. The terminal males can be quite colorful. The species I know tend to be large, wide ranging, fast swimming fish. By the way, they nip off chunks of coral or coral rock and poop the digested parts as fine sand. I would not suggest one for a reef tank given the prices of live rock and hard corals.

No. If you do this you could introduce pathogens that might not be found in that environment. Unless this was a brand new tank, with newly made water and no sand or rock, you should NOT release it. If you can't keep the fish, give it to a LFS.

This is all in all a bad idea, in the future don't repeat this mistake again

Why? Because it was a wild-caught fish? Most of the fish we have are wild-caught.

Because he didn't know what it was? He is trying to figure it out in order to do the right thing.

I don't see what is so bad. You have not even seen the fish yet you are making many snap judgements. It is a 3" fish. It is currently in a 20 by itself. Sounds OK to me. Doesn't mean it will stay there. Back off the OP! Sounds like he got a cool fish, and is trying to figure out how to handle it.

You do realize that it is illegal in most if not all places to catch fish for your aquarium? Also note that the OP has not replied.
