The answer is absolutely "maybe."

Yes, they can, but as with any "substitute" host, the clown may or may not cooperate. The clown may just host in something else, or nothing at all.

Do your clownfish get burn patches from hosting the frogspawn? My clownfish has started getting black spots over the course of the last few days. I'm afraid it may be some type of ich but I've also read that it could be burn spots from the frogspawn. Anyone know anything about this?

no these are not stings or burns it is natural in some clownfish
by any chance are yours ORA percula clownfish?

I have had my clowns host in everything from a large rock of mushrooms to my frogspawn. As long as they feel comfortable and safe they really don't care where they host.

P.S. had a pair even host in my large Tongue coral for about a year before I added a Anemone.

There's actually a term for darkening or black spots patching in clownfish...I forget the name of it. It is definitely not a bad thing. The only way it would be bad is if it is black ich, which is highly unlikely. This would be an external thing though, growing on the outside. Sounds like your clown is growing up and going through some pigmentation changes.

Just like in humans where aging and location can change your hair color, skin pigmentation(slightly), etc.

i have a ora true perc and a wild false, i have a nice frogspawn they have never hosted in. I have seen them try. I bought a GBTA and the ORA perc went in first to my suprise. They now both share it, very excited.

My answer is if you want your clown to host Get an aneome. If you have the right condtions, that is.. It is awesome to see
