will a flame angel and flame hawkfish get along?

Subject pretty much sums it up :) I have an elos midi reef tank ~30ish gallons that needs replenishing. My two remaining fish are a single clown and a flame angel. I'm wondering if we added a flame hawkfish if that would cause any issues, or if they should get along fine. Have read some good things about the flame hawk's personality :)

thanks!

Ordinarily I would say fine. But that's a small tank, it might be better suited to the hawk than to the flame. At any rate, I had a five year old well fed flame angel in a bigger system. Napoleon ruled that tank, but I figured a flame hawk shouldn't bother him but it did. He made it his mission in life to restrict the hawks movements to one very small corner of the tank with a coral colony. He did this for a year and I had to rehome the hawk.

While I believe this behaviour was atypical, I think there are a few things that contributed to it; I don't think the similar colour had much to do with it. Firstly Napoleon's age and status in the tank. Their behaviour changes a lot with age, so your best chance is with a younger fish especially when introduced to an existing fish's domain. The other thing was I wondered whether running the temperature high (27C) contributed to the aggression. Not sure, but I've since noticed aggression can be curbed in part by running a lower temperature. Finally, I think if he had to interact with another angel and the corresponding mental stimulation he might have paid less attention to the poor hawk.

Just some food for thought,

I would say you're fine. They both are known to be aggressive to like species, but they are different so it should be fine. I don't think the tank size is that big of an issue. What are the dimensions?

Honestly, you may not be able to add anything to that tank with the Flame Angel being established. A Flame Angel does not belong a 30 gallon tank, they require a 70 gallon or bigger. If anything I would remove the Flame Angel and add the Flame Hawkfish. Good Luck!

I have a flame hawk and flame angel in a 100g and they completely ignore eachother. As others have mentioned, the tank is on the smallish side so make sure there are a few hiding places in to make them feel secure.

This.

Appreciate the feedback. I usually take liveaquaria's tank recommendations to heart so I'm not sure how we got the flame angel into a smaller tank than he is supposed to be in. Maybe the recommendation increased over the last 6 years. He has been a pretty happy camper and rarely exhibits anything close to aggression, so we'll see how it goes. Have a pair of kaudern's cardinals in QT right now.
