Will Cheato survive a 4 day UPS trip??

Hey guys. I was thinking of ordering some cheato algae from premium aquatics in a week or two (after they finish moving). Just wanted to know if cheato will survive a 4 day UPS trip overseas. I cant imagine it getting here any faster than that. Any input would be much appreciated.

Thanks:beer:

As long as it doesnt get too cold it should be okay.

How cold is too cold? Im sure the heatpacks stop working at least a couple days before the cheato reaches lebanon.

Cheato is pretty tough and grows in a variety of environments and locations. I have no info or experience to back this up so hopefully someone else will chime in, but I would say short term exposure to temps close to freezing, but not below freezing should be okay. 2 days at those temps would probably be bad. Hopefully extra heat packs and extra insulation in the box will help to keep the temps up over 50F so no worries.

Have you already ordered it? I could try an experiment. I could place some in the refridgerator ( close to freezing ) for a couple days, and then see how it recovers. Do you happen to know if its going to be shipped wet or dry ( perhaps just wrapped in a damp paper towel?

Good question...i have not ordered it yet, and im not sure how premium aquatics package it for shipping. Id really appreciate if you tried that experiment. Ive got about a week or two before they can ship it since they are in the process of moving.

I live in Colorado and received gracilaria from Hawaii. The gracilaria survived the trip well. It was placed damp in zip-locked plastic bags and double-bagged to ensure against moisture loss. I believe that the chaetomorpha that I received from within the lower 48 states was packed in the same manner.

No heat packs were used. I believe that you want the macroalgae to be dormant and not engaged in respiration.

Cold packs were not used either but if I was shipping to Lebanon, I would do so before summer.

Thanks for the response. Guess ill give it a try soon.

Would you happen to know anything bout the shipping conditions of live rock? I was also thinking bout ordering some since my lfs only seeds the rock he sells with the little live rock he has in his tanks.

The longer the trip, and the more adverse the conditions get, the more die off there will be.

Ok, but what i meant was how do they package live rock? Im sure it takes a few days to reach the lfs from fiji, and other further places. I wonder how much of it dies during that trip?

Generally its shipped dry with just wet paper wrapped around it. Water is very heavy, and shipping costs are all about weight. As far as I know LR fro say Fiji, comes into wholesalers on the West Coast where it is either unboxed and placed in curing tanks, or it continues on its merry way. Alot of organisms die during the trip.

My guess if you were to order LR from a US source the LR would have to spend quite awhile in transit, and result in further die off. It seems like you're alot closer to Fiji than where I am on the US East Coast. There arent any shippers sending stuff your way from the Pacific?

Have you checked with any East Coast US aquacultured rock dealers? The trip to you would be shorter than stuff coming through here from the Pacific, and with less die off.
