Will drying out rock COMLETELY kill aptasia?

Hey guys...
My folks are getting ready to move and they will be tearing down their tank and rebuilding it after they move. My question is will drying out the rock completely kill the aptasia on it to the point where it will not "re spawn" again after the rock is recycled? They have TONS of aptasia both big and small on their rock (75 gallon tank with about 150 pounds of rock).

Thanks, Jim

why dry out 'live rock' ???

aiptasia has numerous solutions natural/predation and otherwise...

we have a 125dt w/ over 200# LR
turned into an aiptasia farm after the peppermints which had kept the aiptasia at bay - were lost due to predation themselves...

after about 4-5 mos the aiptasia
were covering about every rock in the tank etc...

we added a copperband butterfly and literally in a weeks time there is not an aiptasia to be found... (now have to worry about keeping the CBB alive or passing it on to someone else!)

peppermints have worked very well
at exterminating aiptasia... just might need to add several at a time... will slowly see the aips disappear - eventually until none are remaining.

It will become dead rock. No life to it, not even bacteria. YOu will have to seed it with other live rock to get it to live again.

Personally, I've found juvenile peppermint shrimp, if not stuffed with other food, can clean it out amazingly fast. They start by eating the nearly invisible babies, and work their way up to the adults. I suspected mine of 'farming' the last few adults so as not to destroy their food source, but one day they got hungry as a lovelorn soul with ice cream in the fridge---bye-bye aiptasia.

It Tuning into dead rock wouldn't necesarrily be an issue. We may have to try the copperband butterfly. They have a couple of peppermints but they have done squat.

Thanks for the info.

replacing live rock might be an issue!
financially anyway.

might instead sell the 'live rock' and take the money acquired to later buy dead rock (much less expensive) to start over new...

many myself included would have no problems paying for LR covered in aips... try craigslist.org

sometimes can be hit or miss w/ peppermints...
have worked well for us for long time... not usually overnite sensation but eventually will do the job - or add more to the mix.

i too have a couple peppermints in my tank and they havent done anything either i have even reduced my feedings to the tank in hopes they would get hungry and go for the aiptasia but no luck. i would like to try a copper bb but i only have a 20 gal and it has corals in there and i was told that they might go after them. that would be less of a problem if i had a bigger tank with more corals to be picked on but with only a 20 gall i dont have very many corals and the ones that i do have would probibly be picked to death.

cbb would be out of the question for you.

although havent ever had to use it myself
(bec p'mints have always done the job) many use any other number of solutions...

kalk paste
hot water
hot lemon juice
+++

these are simple solutions

might first go w/ trying to inject w/ hot water

then the lemon juice

if you only have a couple then you have an easy job ahead of you and i wouldnt sweat it too much!;) '

good luck

They wouldn't get rid of the live rock and buy new. I was just thinking that if they are moving and have to tear the tank down and rebuild it...now might be the perfect time to let the aptasia die off before putting it back in the tank and reseed it w/some fresh rock.
