will gig's eat fish?

hello,

i have a pair of gig's in a 34g cube. the only inhabitants are a pair of clowns and a flame angel. i introduced a small 2" panther grouper last weekend. i was going to put it in another tank once if got larger. 3 days later... the panther grouper is gone! it didn't jump, and the overflow has mesh.

so... my only thought process would be that one of the gig's ate it!?!? thoughts?

has anyone had any fish get eaten by gig's?

They'll pop them like a 5 year old pops PEZ.

So it's not quite that simple. Clowns are pretty safe, but the risk level of other fish varies based on the species. Only put in fish that you're willing to give to the 'nem.

Gigantea have a very strong sting and will eat fish just like Haddoni. Of the host anemones, I think these two are most likely to eat healthy fish. I do not have experiences with Mertensii.

+ 1 - Although I think haddonis have a slight edge, gigs can certainly go toe to toe with them. I have lost a number of fish to gigs in the past.

orionn & addictedreefer, gotcha... live and learn. i knew gigs had a hefty sting, but was under the impression that they were unlikely to eat fish. i guess that juvi panther was the wrong choice to throw in there because it liked to hide in the rocks. lol i might just upsize their tank and try a harem of clowns.

Not much room in there for fish with 2 nems

matter of opinion... there is plenty of room in the water column. they might take up half the floor space, but they only rise up 4" when fully expanded. so, there is 16" of water column above them just empty. i will admit that the panther was a bad choice though...

another question....

i am planning on upsizing tanks soon, and was considering either just going with a 60g cube for just my gigs, or a larger (220-300g) tank for the nems and fish. i'm getting a larger tank either way. i'm just trying to decide where to put the gigs.

if i went with the larger tank, do you have any thoughts on fish? i was considering adding tangs, angles, anthias, and such. don't really care about coral, because i already have a mixed reef. i'm assuming to saty away from bottom / cave dwellers such as panthers. lol any other thoughts?

orionn, i see that you have a large carpet / fish tank. any advise on what made that combination a success?

IMO, the larger the tank, the lower the risk. Once the fish know the nem is there, they will have sufficient room to navigate around the nems. I have a 210 with a Haddoni, a very large gig and several mags and have kept tangs, Angels, wrasses, etc. without issue.
