Will my sponge survive?

Sponge was exposed to air.

Had this algae stuff all over it which I scraped of.

Been in tank for a while now under 17w T8 and doesn't seem to be doing too badly. How can I make sure it is doing ok and not going to pollute my tank?

I don't know much about sponges other than they usually don't live long in aquariums.
If that was in my tank, i'd take it out, looks bad, real bad.

Sponges won't normally make it if they are exposed to air. It clogs up the channels they use to filter the water.

if you pulled it out of the water it will probably die - it wont pollute the tank. You need lots of flow and they do best with high nutrient systems.

I have a hitchhiker sponge on a frag of palys and was covered in algae. ive taken this out of the water numerous times to clean sometimes for up to 5mins. just 2 weeks ago I squirted the whole thing with peroxide and soaked the frag in the peroxide solution for 5 mins and the sponge is still there and growing. so I must have a freak sponge that likes the abuse..

That photo is a few weeks old...after cleaning it and putting it in it seems to be doing OK.

I just don't want it to release a toxin and affect the tank...
