will my zoas grow into a ball or will it encrust and cover the rock completely?

well if you keep them on frags and move them a lot then they will usually grow in a ball. but if you glue them in a good spot that they like, they will spread out all over the rocks and if you give them enough time they will spread to other rocks.

my best advice: set it and forget it. it will grow

Mine usually just spread out on whatever they're on, typically off the frag plug and onto the sand.

If you're attempting to ask if they're like an LPS/SPS with a skeleton base, the answer is no. They adhere to the surfaces that are available, not really creating new ones.
