Will removing DSB from fuge cause NO3 spike?

I currently have a 20L sump that has a DSB and chaeto in the second compartment. I added the chaeto after the DSB, don't know why I didnt remove the DSB from the start :headwally:

If I remove the DSB and only leave the chaeto will this cause any spikes in my nitrate levels or possibly have other negative consequences?

Why are you wanting to remove the DSB?

Not sure how big your display is but I'd cut the return off, remove all of the sand and water from sump rinse off the equipment and refill. worst case scenario you may get a larger than usual water change out of the deal.

And yea, why are you removing it?

Total volume with sump is roughly 50g, display is a 40b.

I have to build a new sump and dont want to transfer the DSB to the new sump, only the chaeto.

Depends on bioload in DT versus your filtration capacity after removing DSB. Picture of DT could help a little to see amount of rocks VS fish.
If you are not overstocking or overfeeding, it should not spike so much.
Maybe build up over time. Chaeto grow should indicate how it is going.

Here's a pic, tang will be removed today - leaving only 2 clowns, 2 wrasse, and ywg. My chaeto is currently growing out of control - entire fuge is packed with green dense chaeto.

it should be fine.. Just siphon all water in the sump and replace with clean saltwater

With that sort of chaeto growth, I expect you won't see much if any spike in NO3. That stuff is pretty good at using up the N before it even gets converted to NO3 .
