Will this be a problem?

I created the part of the rockscape you see in the pic below to house a mushroom rock I picked up. I expect it to fill the the corner, and the expansion stopped by the overhang as well as the strong lights above the overhang. Then I read about "devil mushrooms" taking over tanks, and now I'm worried. I am holding the space outside that cubbyhole for SPS and the like, and certainly don't want to be fighting mushrooms. Should I take the mushrooms out, or will they be manageable? Thanks!!

Heres's a close up and a wide shot of the area. Thanks again!

Well my boyfriend's dads tank is just covered in the exact type of mushrooms u have... So I would say keep an eye on them.. I have the same ones in my tank and I put them next to stinging corals and seems to keep them from reproducing like crazy lol... but in his tank the mushrooms attacked everything and all sps and softies are dead and covered in mushrooms... So I would say to be careful :-/ I noticed also if u keep them in islands they dont spread as much either :)

Yes they can i believe... I have had them in the tank for like 4 mths and only 3 have reproduced but like i said, i placed mine near hammers and a large anemone so they kinda just chill lol

Personally, I'd take it out now while you still can.

I took a good amount of the livestock from my father in laws tank when he passed away...some really cool rocks, but a good amount of shrooms. Granted, they aren't as nice as those blue shrooms (brown & green/ blue stripped), but they are a major PITA. If they would stay put that'd be one thing. The problem is they detach themselves and move to where ever the flow takes them, including right on top of SPS, which they kill. The brown shrooms are prolific, and they end up everywhere, especially places you don't want them.

Never again. And like I said, I'd get them out now while you still can.

Thanks, guys. Food for thought. That xenia worries me, too. I think at the very least I will scrape off that xenia with a toothbrush outside the tank and junk it

I'm new to the hobby and I was really interested in mushrooms but they sound like more work than they're worth. Are all different types of mushrooms a nuisanse?

Just get some ricordea Florida instead of shrooms. They have amazing colors and wont take over your tank like the other shrooms will.

For what it's worth, I've had tanks with mushrooms for several years. Even with ''great growth" they've never come close to being what I would consider a nuisance. They're a great beginner coral IMO. I've only recently been hearing about them being a burdon.

I like some of the mushrooms but they seem to take over a little bit. they grow where they want and when you dont want them too. They leave babies all over the place as well. they are definetly a neusance in certain aspects. They look great, they add diversity to the tank but they seem to set up shop wherever they want.

Just hit the spreading one's with some kalk paste if they are going where they don't belong. That stuff kills everything, not just aptasia.

Hahaha after I answered saying mine are not spreading.... Think again under my largest mushroom I found 2 new babies lol and thats the one my nem is constantly touching sooooo I would say just keep an eye out :)

Yeah, these mushrooms of mine are definitely spreading. Two have already stepped off their rock unto the lower one. I do want them to spread and fill in that corner, though. I think it would look cool to have one corner full of those shrooms. I just don't want them to spread beyond that confined space.

I think I will just keep same kalk paste handy, as has been suggested, and kill any "escapees". I'll also probably get a stinger, again as suggested, like a hammer, and put that on that space to the right. Fingers crossed! Thanks again!

mushrooms are inexpensive and can add color to your tank just cut them down whe nthey spread too much

mushrooms, xenia, gsp, kenya tree... i stay away from them all... can spread like mad from what i have seen... but then i again, i look at my small zoa colonies and hope they do in fact grow like mad lol... depends on what you like i guess... but my guess is they will spread very quick and easily where you have them on all that rock... i believe shrooms can alos jus let go and float itself to a new location if need be, but i have not seen it first hand...

love your purple tang btw !
