Will this be too strong?

I currently have two 96 watt pc's over a tank with softies like mushrooms,zoo's,xenia,ricordia,hammer,frogspawn etc. I was wondering if i could take off that light and put my spare 175 watt MH XM mogul bulb and fixture over the tank. Will this bee too much light for the coral/fish?Also will there be any adverse affects?How should i start acclimating the coral/fish ect. to the new light?

generally speaking no...but it really depends on the species and their behaviors

Fish can hide in the shade if need be. Corals are stuck in one place. Youll need to put some layers of screen between the ligths and the tank. Over a week or 2 start removeing them.

you will be fine just do it slow like 1 hr for 7 days then 2 hrs for 7 day etc

I think the screening suggestion makes more sense. Give the corals the photo-period they are accustomed to, just use eggcrate or some type of screen to slowly acclimatize them. You could also keep the light up very high to start and slowly lower it to your desired level.

What size tank?

its a 40 gallon breeder. 36" long. Light coverage is fine.

When I converted from VHO to 175MH I did three things. The first was put three layers of screening over tank. Left each layer on for 5 days. I lowered the photo period from 12 hours to 8 hours and started to raise photo period 1 hour every 3 days after the removal of the screening. The third thing was I started the lights 12" from the top of the water surface and lowered them 2" every 4 days after the photo period reached 12 hours, until they are now 6" from water. I know this sounds cumbersome, hover, I have softies, LPS, and SPS (some of which are 2" under the water surface. With the switch over I lost nothing and nothing went into any type of "shock".

fish should be, liek if you have say a coralife 2x65 fixture, whe nyou first get it, you should turn on one light, then like an hour later turn on the other, it couls shoc the fish form what ive heard, not eleftrically shock , but the other kinda aahha

The 175 watt MH is suffecient for what i have in my tank right if my PC's have been keeping them,right? Also if the outer layers of the tank dont get AS MUCH light as the center will the coral be alright? I know it is hard to tell just from me explaining to you so i will post pics later when i have them up.
