uncle gave me this 12 gallon tank he had lying around in his garage for years.

im new to the hobby so i have no idea if this is good or not however uncle says its a very good system (he personally runs 4 salt water tanks) i will include picture of the filtration system in the tank i recived from him.

he said he bought the tank years ago and built the filtration part himself.

i've ordered a good protein skimmer and a wave maker to add to this tank, do you guys think i can keep coral and 3 small fish and a cleaning shrimp alive using this filtration system provided i do all the required maintances? (pair of clown fish and a blue tang).

if i left out anything please let me know.

No tang. They take a huge tank. Even baby ones. For a 12 gallon, mostly invertebrates. Clowns would be extremely cramped. The larger ones will claim 50 gallons as their own. You'd fare better with small gobies.

THat's a wet-dry media type tank, and they're ok for small tanks and for fish-only tanks. But the 12 gallons is just not going to be helpful. Are you sure you didn't mean 120?

its 50Litres (from australia so i just used litre to gallon converter and its around 12G) i only plan to keep small fish in it when they grow bigger ill just put them in my uncle's big tank and buy small fish again.

You should probably take your uncle's advice then on what fish to get, so he can be sure they'll be compatible with his existing livestock. A 50L/12gal tank isn't going to hold much for very long - you run the risk of really stressing your fish if you put space-requiring species (tangs, angels, etc) in small tanks. Tank wars for space can ensue and only bad things come of that.

I think a pair of smaller clowns would do okay in the tank, but nothing more than that. If you want three fish, then go with some smaller non-aggressive gobies and blennies. Good fish to consider include firefish, tailspot blenny, clown goby, barnacle blenny, etc. Another good option would be a dwarf possum wrasse (the only wrasse that would work in a tank this small).

And NO tangs. The require much more swimming room, even as juveniles, then a 12g tank could ever offer. If you really want tangs, then you need to look at setting up a tank much larger then a 12g.
