Will this work? Transporting live rock question...

Ill eventually be making a move 3hrs away. i was wondering if my live rock will survive a 3hr drive in totes covered in wet newspaper..

will the rock stay "live" or will i have to much die off and should just dry the rock out before i make the move and start a new cycle when reset up the tank?

Mine was only transported for 45 minutes, but with no wet newspaper and in a cardboard box. I had little to no die-off and the feather dusters on it were out in short order. My guess is you'll be fine :)

Keep it moist and you should be ok. Any sponges on it will most likely die off, but the rest should be ok. Expect some cycle once you get it back up, but should be fast.

I have used wet towels in the past - easier to take off and easy to keep damp. Just don't use the good ones. (don't ask how I know this, but I know this)

Sorry to take it a little off subject but a bit of a query with using newspaper. Would it (newspaper)pose and risk to corals or rock due to the chemicals used to treat the paper and in the actual print inks? It was these reasons it was phased out from being used to wrap fish & chips. Just curious as to if any studies have been done as to its effect on aquaria.

What about a cooler with tank water?
I'm in a similar boat, I'm 3+ hours round trip from the closest marine pet store.

Well for me, that just isn't an option. I have 300+lbs of total live rock. Thats many coolers, filled wit to much water making them to heavy...

If you can't keep the rock submerged, I'd go with wet towels, and some water in the bottom of each bucket. Three hours is probably fine with just damp towels, but how often does anything with a move go as planned? We moved 15 minutes away and moved the fish stuff before any human stuff (luckily we had a few weeks to move, so we had a rubbermaid bucket w/ fresh salt water all set up at the new place way before anything else), and it still took longer than anticipated to pack up the stuff from the tank, load it in the car, unload, etc.

We did a few rounds with 5 gallon buckets -- honestly I can't imagine carrying more than that at one time. We did keep everything submerged in water, but the buckets were only about 2/3 full... if you did more rock and less water I think you'd still fill one to about the limit of what you would want to carry. Although I guess a tote with two strong people carrying it would work also... just seems like it would get really heavy really fast!!
