Will tube anemones sting each other?

Just from watching them in the ocean they space themselves out so they don't touch. I have seen them in stores where there were more then one, but they couldn't touch. If I were to keep more then one I would seperate them so they could not touch.

Spacing them out more would be my choice too if there were more room. Most of the space available is too close to corals.

There is a nice pink one in a large cave and I'de love to add a dark purple one for contrast, but they will touch as they grow or move.

Has anyone kept them where they could reach one another?

Thank you.
I'll give it a try next time I see one I just can't resist buying.

By the way, there seem to be two types:
One type with straight tentacles, and another with tentacles that curl and wave with the current more. I have one of each in different places.

Which type do you have?

Can you throw in some pics? I have never seen a pink tube anemone. Personally I'm a big fan of them.

heres a pink one I used to have, but I sold it to someone when I downsized my system and the nem was too big to put in my 24g (they do get QUITE large!)

Pufferpunk: I have the same kind of tube anemone and would like to know what to expect from it. How large is yours and how fast is it growing? Anything particular about their requirements?

Mine was 11" in diameter more, than and year ago, and now the biggest extension is 17" in diameter. Either it just feels better or it grows. Makes me wonder what space it will need in a few years.

Mine grew for some time & then after a while, looked like it was going to die:

I mean, he really looked bad!

I contacted the author of this article:
http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/june2004/invert.htm

He agreed the anemone really looked like a goner. It receded into it's tube for weeks & then one day he came back out. He has been recovering for months now (I never knew what happened to him) & eats very well. He never got to be as large as he was before though.

Mine was not looking good when tank had red cyano, bristle worms on it, and decaying after treatment aiptasia, same when nitrates and phosphates went high. Moved it in personal 12g Nano-cube with clean water, no bristle worms, and ir is back to life, better than ever. 12g tank is a little small to it

I have two that are always in contact with one another and both seem to be very healthy. As far as expansion, I have one that retracted into the tube and would only come out at night after being out and fully open daily. When it did come out, the outer whorl of tentacles were only about an inch long and looked damaged on the ends. Over the past eight months, it has grown back, but it is still not as large as it once was. I also have two others (the two that are touching) that seem to vary in size according for no apparent reason. Does anyone have any thoughts on why this happens or why the single anemone had an issue, but has since recovered?

Dizzle63: can you post photos or describe, what kinds are touching and if peach pink tube anemone is doing well at the same temperature as purple with green center does?
My peach pink once was sucked to the grid of 600 gph powerhead and night and was noticed and removed only in the morning. Recovered fairly fast, ~ in a month.
Almost died and recovered very slow (2-3 months), when I changed flow in the tank to suit better high flow corals. Tube anemone tried hard to find place of peace and quiet, but stuck behind rockword. Removed and placed it in a separate tank with uplifting medium flow. Opened at once.
Closed for a week, but didn't lost tentacles or shrunk, after massive treatment of aiptasia and having red cyano in the tank. Same for increased phosphates. Opened when situation normalized.

Dendro982, none of mine have ever moved, even after adding more flow for SPS. The two that touch do not open as fully as before the addition of the flow, but where they are located in the tank, this may be a good thing. I keep my tank at 80 degrees. The two that touch are both green centered, one being neon pink, and the other being purple/black. The one that I have had issues with is the neon pink/peach one that is on its own in the front corner of the tank. This one is seems to get larger than the other two, and also seems to be more nocturnal.

How deep is the sandbed in your tank? What temperature do you keep your tank at? What do you feed yours?

Thank you.

Bare bottom :D , 77F in the winter, up to 82.5F in the middle of the summer. Mysis, larger plankton (Euphausia pacifica), Marine Cuisine, 4-5mm (lees than 1/4") shavings of grocery seafood, no salt or preservatives: salmon, shrimp, baby cuttlefish or octopi (very little, smaller pieces), haddock, mussels; LFS's silversides, krill, same size pieces.

Now take a deep breath, hold it and count to ten before :uzi: me.

Many people kept tube anemones in tubes (referring for details to athiel website and 1924-29 publications on keeping them in glass tubes, available online). Example that I tried to achieve is here, in the Tube anemone section, where they are in high bowls.

Initially it was housed in plastic tube, slightly wider than anemone diameter, according to R. Toonen in uplifting flow between and below 2 x600gph powerheads in 90g tank. But: it expended the same night 2.5 times larger, than it was expanded in store, alotted space was too small:

Freed space in opposite end of the tank, moved there. From there it left first time and was sucked in powerhead. Recovered fast.

It moves in the sand, so next time accommodations were betta fish bowl with the same CaribSea Ocean Direct fine sand. Better.

Eventually freed for it quarter of 90g tank, 18" wide:

After adding dendronepthhya and few scleronepthyas, that are sensitive to flow, adjusted flow for them and re-oriented it for swiping detritus from under the rock forward.
Tube anemone went on strike. When I was able to find it and remove from behind of the rock with no access from the top, it was few days not fed, shrunk and miserable looking.
Restored flow, it was pacified again.

Now 90g tank is shut for moving in another place in the room and reaquascaping, and tube anemone is in 12g Nano Cube. At beginning (again, glass is similar to the K.Guba's tank) with power filter:

Left again and tried to hide under the power filter, where flow is not directed top to bottom.

Had to replace it by internals surface skimmer/filter Current, with flex-lock 2 outputs. In the same time tried to make DSB with Tahitian Moon black sand, ~4.5" deep. This sand was disapproved. Returned glass with aragonite sand. It chose to sit between glass and rock.

Tank is 15" wide, and now anemone maximal extension is more. It will need a larger tank. What I would like to know, is how big this kind of anemone will be in 5 yrs - to choose appropriate size. Attempt to exchange it on the smaller one was unsuccessful. But the big one is magnificent under combo PC lights.

Sorry, full 90g tank DSB is not in my plans, but if I'll clean nano next time, I will make DSB with aragonite sand (Ocean Direct).

If shooting me is postponed, I'll appreciate advise on keeping tube anemone in high flow tank, not larger than 90g. Temperature, compatibility with purple-green tube anemones and so on. Ah, and my SG is 1.026.

GREAT pics, beautiful anemone and tank.
I have two for nearly two years in 3 inch sand bed in my 180. A 6" diameter pink center with long wavy tentacles like the one in your picture, and a 3" diameter green center with shorter stiff tentacles. Flow is not a problem as both are in caves. Neither has moved since they settled in within a few hours of being introduced. I'll try to post pics, but I'm a dreadful photographer and rarely get good ones. The stiff tentacle on is usually the same size, but the wavy one changes drastically in hight and diameter for no reason I can see.
They grow very slowly but that may be because I feed them very little. Just a squirt of mysids once a week.

I also have a 10" wavy tentacled one in a dark area of my sump for a year. It is in a container with about 6" of sand, seems fine and also expands and contracts for no apparent reason.

Would also love to know how big and how fast they grow if you feed the heck out of them.
