Winter in Yosemite

I when to Yosemite on a whim this weekend and what a trip that was! I did a 7 mile round trip hike up to the top of Yosemite falls from the valley. 7 miles wasn't long but the increase in elevation some 2500ft and 2-5ft of snow on the trail was a challenge! I wasn't able to tackle all the technical shots I wanted but I got a few keepers. I'll definitely want to head back after a fresh coat of snow falls on the valley for that classic winter look. For now here are some shots since the last snow was 2 weeks ago.

Nice. Did you bring snow-shoes for the falls trail or was is sufficiently packed? The top third can get kinda hairy this time of year.

Hey Doug!

The falls trail was great up until that top third that you refer to. The snow was fresh and only one person had attempted the hike before us that day (evident from snow shoe prints). I wish I had snoe shoes for that part but we trudged along anyways, sinking in about a foot or two with almost every step! we made it to the top fine and had a wonderful nap/lunch on the warm sunlit rocks right next to the falls before heading to the valley.

Great photos! Thanks for sharing!

You should try to get a shot of the Horsetail Fall at sunset on the east side of El Capitan.

I haven't been up there for years. I will be going there this summer, hopefully. Love the photographs and nice shots!

awesome shots! makes me want to drive up there this weekend! Did you go on the free entrance day? I thought I saw on the news that last weekend you could get into the park for free.

Yeah it was was free all weekend! The valley was empty. We walked right into camp 4. There are 35 campsites there and 20 of them were vacant.

Well done, some nice captures! Pesky contrails....it used to tear me up when I was there and I would hear a plane, then see that streak go across my artistic pallet! ANyway you can save some of the detail in the snow on some of those shots? I think it would add to the images if you could. It might just be my monitor or the save for web deal but there seems to be a lot of total white without detail. I think the one with the tree against the wall and the low fog would be even more amazing with some detail in the bottom half.

Well done, looks like an awesome trip....I'm jelous :).

Very nice captures! I wish I could visit again, especially during winter. Will definitely avoid the 3-day weekends this time :D

Thanks everyone! I'll try and see if I can recover some detail but they might be too overblown. I was using slower shutter speeds and higher apertures so the fog tends to make everything milky.

Fantastic shots, I've made it to Yellowstone but not Yosemite. Would love to walk in Ansel's footsteps.

Excellent photos! The first is certainly my favorite (I prefer the landscape to the portrait version), but they're all wonderfully composed and just excellent images.
