So the ich in my tank is not getting better (see post from a couple weeks ago). I'm going to do hypo in my dt this week and needed some help. Here's my plan : tank all liverock and corals out and put them in a couple tanks, take out all the crabs, snails, and 2 sand sifting stars and put them with the rock. I'll have lights and power head in with the rocks. So now ill have fish and sand in the dt and ill go through the hypo process. I was thinking since i will be keeping the rock and corals out for 12 weeks that I would just do hypo for that long as over kill. Now for the answers I need. I will be running my protein skimmer so should I go buy a filter or just put carbon in mesh bags and place them in the sump for filtration? Will the crabs, snails, and stars carry the ich and just bring it back to the tank after I put them back in after 12 weeks? What should I do with the sand bed, keep it in, replace it after hypo, or just take it out all together ad put new sand in after the ich is gone? The sandbed is old anyway so Idk. Please help

I'd first read the stickys at the top of the disease section of the forum. they'll answer most of your questions.....and then some.
I'm not clear what you are trying to do about bio-filtration in your hypo tank. It sounds like you are just using LR, substrate, and a skimmer; and that can work will in a DT. But you're removing the LR and a skimmer does nothing under hypo conditions. Also, all the crud and die-off of micro-critters in the substrate will add to your ammonia problem. You can use a HOB filter, but it needs to be cycled first. Carbon in a hypo tank serves no real purpose; it may remove a tiny portion of the organics, but won't do much else. Carbon does a lot of things, but none of them are vital nor contribute much to your bio-filter. I didn't read your other post, but have you been treating these fish at all (if not, why) and why not just move the fish? Ich treatment is always easier in a bare QT. I'm either missing something (that happens more often lately) or you seem to be doing everything backwards.

The problem is I have a 180 gallon tank with 250lbs of LR and to move the fish would take me forever to catch and I do not have a QT tank large enough or enough of them to handle all the fish. Just figured since liverock cant swim away while I try to catch it, then it would be easier to move the rock.

Instead of hypo, why not chloroquine?

Chloroquine phosphate while dosed into a tank has been known to not be invert safe. But with that being said, if you add it to a gel based food it should be alright. The Pittsburgh zoo and aquarium treated a clam tank that had an ich outbreak and it did not harm the clams.

Chloroquine phosphate is a drug that is used to treat malaria. From what I have read it works. But if you dump the powder straight in the tank is can kill inverts and corals.

I can easily put the inverts and corals in a qt (much easier than catching the fish). I just have been reading up on it and see mixed reviews but ppl are doing different.

I think it works SOMETIMES. I've had tech people at two places tell me that its impossible to monitor the drug level and very difficult to keep in suspension. It will kill most inverts and most life in the LR & substrate too.
