Woke up to my clam dislodged this morning

There's a product by 2 little fishes/julian sprungs called phyto-plan... my friend has been using it and he swears by itfr his lps and clams, says it makes them 10x more colorful and opened up. Its basically a dried phytoplankton. I'm getting my first jar of it in an order tomrw, i don't hae clams but i'll let ya know how my lps react.

They are supposed to be fed phyto a few times a week until they get to about 4" because of something with their mantles. They also aren't supposed to be under super light until the hit about 4" because their mantles are to thin and there isn't enough zooanthelle (not sure if that's spelled right or not) or something like that. I wish I could remember where I read that, lol

I wish u could remember too... I don't necessarily agree and would like to learn more if you an supply your source of info...

It may not be necessary but we think of it like a treat (like a dog gets a cookie). The clam seems to really like it. So we kept doing it. I wouldn't tell anyone to feed or not to feed. But I do know that it works...well worked, for us. Our clam was the healthiest thing in the tank up until yesterday.

I'm curious what signs the clam exhibited to show it's liking of the feeding...

Do hope your clam bounces back jus the same...

my vote is def on the bi-color. I used to have one in my reef and it quickly developed a taste for all my soft corals and my Maxima. Bi-colors are def on the higher risk side of the dwarf angels, the worst offenders IMO. The clam may have been retracting/dying as the angel nips at it and it slowly will die. If you had the angel still in there, I would def get it out. Best of luck!

i never feed my clams but when i feed coral and fish the blast of phyto and reef energy and mysis (pardon my lack of terms ) the mouth of the clam opens and you can see inside it , I think its a female .....my clam is very happy , they do not do well with any trace elements of copper or heavy metals , any rust on anything ? treat with polyfiberpad and see if it helps .

never fed my clam although it has occasionally dislodged itself. Power outage in october ****ed it off. adjusting my lights seemed to **** it off and it jumped again. Then when I cleaned my sump I stirred up god knows what that was suspended for about 36 hours in the water and it jumped again maybe a month ago.
Clam still opens and seems happy.. been living in my tank for close to a year now. I wouldn't worry about it jumping. might have been unhappy for whatever reason and wanted a change of scenery.

:fun2:

but I read a much better article online that says that all tridacna clams filter whatever dissolved particles they need from the water and won't take any supplemental feeding. Here is the article I was just talking about

Well, I don't think he made it through the night. Was responsive to me waving my hand over it just before the lights went off. Now the mouth is open wide and the clam has sucked into its shell that's still all the way open. Sad day over here.

I'm sorry to hear this, that guy had been with you for a little while now and always looked real happy

I'm still placing blame on the bicolor. A week or so ago saltychick pointed out a semicircle missing from the edge of its mantle, but also just looked like a weird way it was growing. I'm pretty positive it was the first reason now. I did a 10g wc just in case and all levels are registering normal except a slight increase in NO3. (Trimmed back my macro prob a bit too much last week) But I wouldnt think 5ppm more would shock the clam to death

Clams do fine with elevated nitrates. mine actually spiked to a number i am ashamed to even speak of. During that time my clam was happy and its colors looked a bit better than normal

So the bicolors have it! She will not be coming with to the 90 gallon. When everything switches over I'm gonna set up a 29 qt for her and that's where she's gonna live until saltychick gets the 57 up
