Work and feeding schedule

Hi all,

I leave my house at 7am. My wife gets home around 2:30pm. I usually feed the fish before I leave and my wife feeds them when she gets home. But I'd like to program the lights to come on about 9am and stay on until 8 or 9pm so I can enjoy the tank when I get home.

Do you think one feeding a day(when my wife gets home at 2:30) is OK. I have two clown fish and one royal gamma in a 50 gallon tank with a sump.

I don't want to starve them. But I do have some algae. And cutting back to once a day would probably help that.

Problem solved.

You just have to finagle the opening a bit -- even on the smallest opening it drops a lot of food. I put tape over mine and tested it a few times until it was giving out the right amount.

Set that up to feed in the afternoon then if you want to feed again when you get home you can.

That said, once a day is fine.

I feed mine when I get home from work around 6pm. if you had Anthias that might be different but all mine seem okay with once a day. They can pick some food off the rocks if they need an afternoon snack.

I would let the fish sleep in until the afternoon. That way your wife can feed when she gets home and you could feed/enjoy in the evening.

Something like: 1:00PM to 10:00PM

A shorter photoperiod may help with the algae some. You could also employ an autofeeder.

On my last tank I fed every other day and had no issues for years..

I'm with these two guys. If your tank is anywhere near established, there will be plenty of things for your fish to nibble on between feedings. I try to remember to feed once a day. Even my Anthias (Lyretails) have no problems with that,

If you are going to get a feeder, I would suggest the Eheim. They make an excellent product that will possibly outlast your interest in the hobby.

Thanks a bunch for the information. It is really helpful and exciting. I'll turn the lights on at 1pm and then have my wife feed them when she gets home at 2- 3. And I'll keep the lights on til 10. Less feeding and less light might kill off some of the algae I've been dealing with.

+1 with these guys. Sometimes on weekends if I'm bored and want to see my fish feed I'll do so a little more so I can enjoy them.

I feed my fish daily. But small amounts, plus I have 30 fish. Well my eheim feeder took a swim, so I'm not sure about the daily feedings anymore. Gotta wait to see if it'll work...:lol:
