Would a uv filter fix my problem

I use tap water in my tank and after a few days the water turns a lovely green/yellow so the tank takes on a rather nasty color cast. Would adding a uv filter to the system solve this problem?

IMO a uv sterilizer will help clarify your water of free floating algae if that is the problem that you are having. But if you are using tapwater with phosphates in it, you should find another water source. A uv sterilizer can also kill good things in the water besides algae blooms. For example, it will kill copepods if the water "dwells" long enough in the uv light. The dwell time is dependent on the pump driving it. Another option, is to have your uv on a timer so sometimes it is killing everything and sometimes it isn't. I would just invest in a good ro/di filter for your home or get your water change water and top off water from your lfs.
