as to suggest good ND filters/filter sets that are 4x4 or 4x6?

IS polyester a complete waste of time? or should i buy sets of them, see which i use the most then buy nicer gel filters? or just buy the gel straight away. I have never used 4x4 filters. always lens mounted.

I use, and love my Singh-Rays but they're expensive. Poly is okay but be careful with Cokin. Their ND filters really aren't neutral and can mess with color accuracy.

Lee is good too.

I think george lepp model is what im looking for, I can't say i care for Singh-Rays' website tho :c/

this is mainly for water, when backpacking, I can't always get to the rivers/falls at night or morning, should I start with a 2 or 3 stop? I will likely only get one for xmas..

Depends. All of my lenses, except my macro, are 77mm so I only need 1. :)

That scenario can have it make sense. Just be careful and watch for flare from light coming in between the filter and lens.

Here's a pic I took with a 3 sepia and a 8 star. Both cokin and hand held together.
