Would appreciate some feedback...

Go ahead and get those lights if you really want to. A few member in my local club have that exact light and have nothing bad to say about it.

I would avoid pinwheel skimmers. They use to have OTP pumps which were kind of loud. They are now putting a different pump on them so Im not sure if they are loud or their reliablilty. Also have a rather large foot print.

The foot print is a bit larger, but I am running the reef octopus nwb 110 4" pinwheel skimmer. I find it to be pretty quite and reliable, it pulls really good skimmate for me! I have been running this on my 40 gal dt and 20 gal sump for the past 7 months with no issues.

My skimmer is alot quieter than the nwb. I have no doors and you cant even hear it.

The light will produce enough coverage over a 4 foot tank.

And all Reef Octopus skimmers perform well. Ive owned 3 and cant complain really about anything. Just the pinwheel pumps are a big louder than I like. I like to hear nothing but water trickling

They now come with a silencer on the intake hose, and my stand has doors (as does the stand made by motivatedreefer) and I only ever hear trickling water. I think the pinwheel is a great value IMO but to each their own!

Stick a bubble blaster or sicce psk on it. Youll hear a huge difference.

I thought the exact same thing. I have not checked it out myself, but someone in my local club was saying that's what he did for the first few months before he purchased a RODI system himself. My club has a mini auction/yard sale going on today, so I will check it out on my way home.

Anyone have any suggestions on a reasonably priced RODI system and where I can find it?
 
I like Spectrapure but there are lots of options out there. It's more about the membranes than the physical unit.
 
So my neighbor is actually getting out of the hobby and she is going to sell me her typhoon 3 and give me her TDS meter for a really good price. All i need is replacement filters. Lucked out on that one!

Anyone have a bad experience with this RODI unit?

I use the kent salt, can't tell you anything on long term results but short term it's salt??? But is dissolves super fast and is relatively cheap, all charts I see show it has same as everyone else....again it's salt to me? Also get that live sand and rock wet or it won't be live for long. It might have already started die off. Lastly check on your water from the store it's likely not ro/Di water merely ro water. Better then tap water but not 100% tds free either.

I appreciate your feed back. My friend has the rock and sand in a 300 gallon tub with a pump to keep circulation. He says it is still alive but I should find out this weekend coming up.

I got my refractometer today from my neighbor as well. Nothing beats free lol.

The only 3 things I need now are my lights, (which I will be going with the Evergrow it2080), a skimmer, (between Coralife Super Skimmer 125 gal and
Reef Octopus Pinwheel In-Sump Skimmer), and some sort of flow. I found a wave maker for $100 that I might take.

Anyone have suggestions for wave makers? I have been told those are a little better than just power heads since the food would be distributed both ways on the corals.
 
So a member of my local club is willing to sell me a Tunze Nano Wavebox 6206, at basically the same price. I was actually on amazon about to order one and I got a call.

I also think I am going to go with the Reef Octopus NWB-110 Protein Skimmer.

Hopefully the sump will be completed in the next few days and I will be adding the sand, rock, and water this up coming weekend!! I'm pretty stoked to see everything set up and running! I got the hinges and will probably attempt to add the doors tonight or in the morning.

If everything goes well, I will add some pictures after. I was also thinking about taking some conduit and making a light hanger instead of hanging the lights from my ceiling, and I am going to get the red sea test kits this week.

Is there anything else I am missing? I have the RODI unit, test kits, skimmer, salt, lights, sump, return pump, sand, rock, refractometer, magna float, and thermometer. (I would love to get an ATO, but not sure I can afford one at this time.)

Let me know if anyone knows of anything else that is a must have for a great start to a reef. I know I need corals and fish but that's next month :)
