Would it work?

Planning a theoretical expansion into my first house (thank you bursting real-estate bubble!), and trying to find a way to do something unique now that I'm allowed to cut up the walls and do some general damage.

What I'm considering is a 6-8" acrylic tubing connecting two tanks roughly 4-6 feet apart (and potentially perpendicular to each other, L-shaped on adjacent walls). I'm trying to convince myself this would work, and I'm having some doubts.

Is this ridiculous? I know that flow through the tube will be unusual - too little and it's a dead spot waiting for algae growth, too much and it becomes too much hassle for anything to pass. I imagine that leaving the tube exposed (framing around it, likely) would allow me the best chance of keeping it clean, but also considering a dark 'cave' may be of interest to many of the fish and inverts...
