an acylic tank that is 48(w)x30(d)x30(h)? from what ive been about to find, the depth is right along the limit, but i am comfortable with that, so my real question is if the light will be able to give enough lighting depth wise, since it is a 30" deep tank.

the light fixture dimensions are: 48" x 15" x 2.5"

On a tank 30" deep, I wouldn't go with a TEK. You'd want a fixture that is overdriven with Icecap ballasts. You'd also want better reflectors to get the light to penetrate is deep as possible.

I don't think overdriven bulbs will penetrate deeper, the problem is the TEK is that it lacks adequate cooling shotening bulb life and decreasing output, look into the ATI powermodule or sunpower, or the aquatinics constellation.

You would also need to specify for us what you are trying to grow.

If you want to grow leathers, mushrooms, xenia, etc.... even a 4-lamp model would work.

For SPS go with the 6-lamp.

Take the advice above about the heat issue. Either cool the TEK with fans (which can be done) or go with a cooled fixture. The heat will cause a PAR output drop, and it can be pretty a pretty stout drop.

Or better yet use a Retro kit if you have a canopy over your tank and use IceCap reflectors. There is a thread around here somewhere comparing the TEK II and the IceCap reflectors, and the IceCaps were the better (though take nothing from the TEK II they are a good reflector).
