Wow... Ice White SPS

I have 2 whitish corals in my tank right now.

Initially received... from an extremely nutrient poor tank.

Here it is now in my system.

How about this one? It's the size of a big softball. It's hard to tell in this pic but most of the tips are a nice blue color.

This coral will darken considerably if it survives.

The reason I say this is it looks like an aquaculture species I had. It is blue with zero nitrates but will start turning brown with any little addition.

I got this a few months ago from a local coral farmer. I believe it was a wild coral. It looked more of a really light yellow with blue tips in his tank but there's lots of natural sun hitting his coral troughs. It's looked exactly like this since day one in my tank. It's starting to base out and I also have a small frag I broke off accidentally in my frag tank under a different light. It looks exactly the same also.

The only way I can get a picture to come out is with just actinic lights and the camera flash on.

cmon guys lets get real here. Its not right it is either secondary to an extremely poor or low nutrient environment or it will die or get darker.
There's IMHO no other options.

I agree.....I'm amazed at how many people think "ICE WHITE" acros exist. They are bleached....they most likely RTN or if you are lucky will turn brown and take forever to color up. Sometimes if its not too bad they can skip the brown and turn out nice...but you gotta be really lucky :)

+2. Those white ones that are faint blue will be turning brown in 2 weeks. Just buy them and try it out. They never hold their color, but they are som tempting to buy. Just don't buy them.

In my CORAL magazine that arrived yesterday, they have a picture of a bleaching coral with blue tips. I was reading it today in the car and my brother pointed to it and said, "that's amazing!". I decided not to tell him that it was dying.

The coral I was referring to in my post was white, and held its white color, and grew white with blue tips, for years. You dont have to believe me, but saying they dont exist seems naive.

It may be a taking a chance buying them, but they can turn out to be stunning pieces if the recover. The one in my picture was the nicest piece I have ever seen in person before I had a major bleaching incident and lost it with a few others. But it that never happened I would still have it for sure.

what about icefire echinata? pretty white to me.

Maybe as a frag, but as they get larger I see blue, green, and brown as the main colors in the ice fire. IMO there's really NO all white sps, mostly I think any white commonly becomes brown or green. Just ten years experience talking...

a tenius. i have one, been growing like that for years. white, almost no color with med blue tips. you could say the skin is pearl colored. i took a couple frags and they didnt survive. i couldnt tell they had bleached until i looked at the tips. actually there are lots of acros without pigmentation. they dont send a lot to america as we are fond of the colors. however if you look at some of the german/euro and japanese tanks you will see them very often. some even prize them. i know i really like mine.

Mike its not naive- they do exist right before they are dead or they are deprived of nutrients. All of them pastels colors are secondary to ULNS by whatever method you choose- skimming/zeo etc etc etc . HTH

Elan is you have an echinata in a zeo or such system it may appear white with blue shades. Just like a tenius that may look like its whaite( cream colored ) with blue tips according to light and nutrients.

well i can assure you my system is not ulns. i feed like crazy and have a pretty simple setup. there have been several articles written about this. im gonna look around and see what i can find. i know there are also posts about this in other forums as well so i will try to find some......

i sometimes find it odd when its easier to say no or that its completely not possible than maybe consider it is possible......so let me clarify what im saying, not "ice white" but without pigmentation. like as if the coral were bleaching, or even moments from death!! yet beautiful, growing, thriving next to many many acros looking just as healthy with fantastic color and growing just the same. the reason i pointed out the euro and japanese set ups is that i myself was stunned to think that my coral was dying or some odd exception? only to find that they import these in other countries because they are an oddity in the coral world. plus also to find that upscales fish and reptile in portland, oregon here has them available as a frag for you. ask for travis the curator who has aided in the wonderful findings of the microlados and original oregon torte among many others. he will gladly take one for the proper price and you can have it in your very own aquarium. its a blue tip tenius without pigmentation in the entire body and base. there are also several deep water bottle brush acros with only color in tips. and some acros with no color what so ever.

the world was once flat, and sea life was not maintainable in home aquaria, as well as protien skimming was a farce.....is it not so believable that things can be out of our basic knowledge? gimme a a day or so and i will find ya some more info. im pretty certain one r.c. totm had some here as well.

Color in the tips is still color....I was refering to very pale or white corals through out the whole body, similar to the ones that rizup or elan L posted. If the coral has colorful tips it is a whole other story.
