Wow, making your own fish food is great!!!

I know there have been several posts about making your own fish food. I never did it b/c I thought it was too much hassle when I could just buy frozen food at the store.

I have to say, it is definately worth the effort as my fish LOVE it!!!!I had a porcupine puffer that would eat nothing but baby silversides, thats it. Well, once I put my homemade food in the tank my porky puffer just ate it up. Yeah!!!

Making this stuff will stink up the kitchen so maker beware. I was able to get everything I needed at the 99 Ranch market and my LFS.

Here's what I used from 99 Ranch:

baby cuttle fish
fresh shrimp
fresh clams
silversides
Nori
fresh clove of garlic

I also added this since I had some in stock:

Frozen Cyclopeeze
Frozen formula one & two
frozen bloodworms and mysis shrimp
a few drops of selcon
I also added saltwater from my tank to make it easier to blend

After everything was blended up I just spread the food evenly in a small ziplock bag and placed it in the freezer. When I want to feed I just break off a small piece and put it in the tank. The fish go crazy!!! (you can also use egg crate so that you have cubes if you prefer)

My understanding is that you can use pretty much whatever seafood you have and just blend it up. Make sure not to blend it too much as you want to have chunks for your fish to eat.

Have fun,
Julie

Julie, the 99 ranch stores also carries fish eggs, those should be good for feeding as well. They usually have a few sizes (different roes) available.

Yeah,

I saw those but I didnt want to buy too much. I'll probably use roe in my next batch. I know others have used something called "pearls" I want to use that next too.

Yep, I use masago (smelt eggs) which isnt the supertiny stuff. Commonly used in sushi. A small tub of it only runs about $3. at the local Korean market (Galleria in Northridge off Reseda). Good stuff.
You may want to hand mix the eggs in after blending your concoction as a blender will probably break them all.

golden pearls were good back then...

anyways, question, can you for example, dehydrate fish/squid and then put in blender when dried to make it into a fine flake/meal and then feed when you want??/

My grandma goes to the 99 ranchmarket, I wish there was one near me. Is there a store like that around Rancho Cucamonga?

Chris

And homemade fish food is CHEAP!

It's just hard to make small enough batches that you go through it before it gets freezer burn. A vacuum sealer helps, but doesn't totall prevent the freezer burn.

Ive always wanted to make my own fish food but I dont think I could get over the smell/nasty looking factor to do it....Id probably BARF!

Another Rancho Cucamonga reefer! I wish there was a 99 ranch market here. I work for the City and our Redevelopement dept said 99 ranch inquired in opening a store here but thats all he heard. Perhaps 99 Ranch needs a higher asian population in Rancho Cucamonga. Rowland Heights will be your closest 99 ranch store.

LOL!

There's nothing wrong with eating freezer burned food from a food safety issue. It's nasty, but it won't hurt you.
