WOW why does this happen to all the good tanks

yeah makes me really look hard at my system and iron out any little bugs in it, afterall it could happen to anybody

Well, I had a mini disaster myself last weekend. The glass shield under my 250hqi exploded while we were gone and to make a long story short, in that three hours of intense UV light most of my 20" 5 layer green monti cap is gone, my large orange digitata is gone, and my huge finger leather burned up. I didn't immediately take out the leather and it sent toxins through the tank and damaged or killed a bunch of my lps.

I think a splash from one of my rambunctious fish caused the glass to break.

Man, sorry to hear that Todd. Yup, HQIs puts out some serious UV. That Green monti was awesome. As long as some of it survived, you will get it back. I have some orange digis if you would like some. I actually had a close call on an HQI shield before. I found out one cracked, but didnt break. I got really lucky on that.

It would have been nice if it was just a crack but it shattered and glass was all over the bottom of the tank.

I'll take a frag of the orange digi, it's nicer than any of the green ones.

Chris, Steve answered your question on what went wrong with his skimmer. That actually happened to me. I run an external skimmer and the skimmate drains into a 2 gallon jug. First time I cleaned my skimmer, I didnt readjust the air. It filled up my 2 gallon waste container within an hour. Thank goodness I caught it and it only dumped about a 1/4 of a cup on the floor. If I would have left the house, I would have had a big flood. I clean my skimmer every 3 months and I always start at the lowest possible setting and readjust every few hours.

Makes sense then, so that is why they make they auto shutoff waste containers? of course I'm sure now he's wishing he had one of those little guys.
Thats the way it goes though, it seems everytime I come across an awesome reef tank you read about how the pictures are a year old and the tank has crashed since then or it was tore down for one reason or another.
Chris

Just about every time I change water I have to shut off my EuroReef because its pulling clear water. Luckly for me its in sump and the bottle it drains into is also in the sump.

But that reminds me I need to change the bottle as its full.
Free skimmate to who ever whats it. :D

This is happening because when you turn off yur pumps, your sump starts to fill up. When this happens it changes the water level and your skimmer overflows. It would happen i mine if I didn't turn off the skimmer before WC's.;)

The whole sump is on one poser strip, so when the return pump is off so it the skimmer.
I do need to raise it about 3 inches but other than water changes it pulls a nice dark gunk.
