Wrasse compatability question: adding another with existing Melanurus Wrasse?

So I have a beautiful Melanurus Wrasse in my 150 gallon mixed reef, and was hoping to get some ideas and/or experiences regarding the addition of an additional wrasse?

Long story short: I'm not 100% sure yet, but think I found a Monti eating Nudibranch on my Monti Cap frag last night. Like I said, I'm not really sure yet, but it got me thinking that having a few wrasses in the tank instead of just the one might not be a bad idea as a sort of biological control going forward. However, the Melanurus is doing so well, I really want to be as safe as possible adding anything else, and don't want to risk adding something that will cause problems for him.

I have read a lot about the Yellow Canary Wrasse for one, and wonder if this wouldn't be a good tank mate? I don't have much experience with Wrasses, as this is only the second one I have ever had (had a sixline years ago).

I've never had a problem mixing wrasses. I have three male green bird wrasses in a tank and they play together all day long. But whatever you read says never have more than one in a tank. You can't predict fish behavior. If you want to give it a shot, go for it. If for some reason it doesn't work out you can make a change. Most of the time it does work out.

An established melanurus CAN be a bit feisty towards new halichoeres in a tank. That being said I have also seen them behave as model citizens to the newcomer. IME the best way to add more halichoeres would be to add 2 or 3 new fish to disperse any aggression by the resident melanurus. Also try to get females or juveniles rather than males as he will be more tolerant of these.

Mixing Halichoeres is a mixed bag; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Using an acclimation box can help quite a bit however, but even then it might not work out. Also, it's worth noting not every specimen is a great active hunter; if all you wish to accomplish is put a dent in the nudi population you might end up disappointed.

I have a melarunus and an iridis and they get along great. I did use an acclimation box with a tub of sand in it for a week however. I purchased the melarunus for red planaria and he wiped them out. I just love iridis so thats why I got him.
