wrasse jumping

I've heard tons of stories about people finding wrasses on the floor, in the overflow, in the sump, etc

Is eggcrate sufficient in covering the tank or should I cover with something else ? Can they really fit through the small openings in the eggcrate ?

Thanks

I would have to say yes, they can fit through the openings.

I've heard too many stories of them doing so. I personally wouldn't want my $150 Mystery Wrassie on the floor.

I'm sure others will disagree.

I'm using eggcrates over my tank and so far so good.. by the looks of it, most my fishes won't fit in the openings of the eggcrates so I'm not too worried.. the only thing about eggcrates is it seems to block lots of the lights from the MH.. other than that, I like the eggcrates since they're so easy to work with..

hope that helps..

I would not utilize eggcrate if you plan on keeping wrasse. They seem to be able to fit through the openings of the eggcrate, and have heard stories from other hobbyist about losing pricey wrasses becaue they did not have a closed top on the tank. Either spend the cash on a glass top or purchase acrylic sheets from Home Depot to put on top of the tank. Good luck.

Acrylic will bow into the tank.
Egg crate is still a chance; as many have found out, just like a mouse it doesn't tanke much of a hole for the little buggers to squirt through.
Screen door screen is probably the only100% guarantee it isnt etting through, but IMO its going to block more light than the egg crate. (I have my lights enclosed in my canopy so I don't know for sure.)

Eggcrate works fine for me. I don't see how the adult fairy males usually sold could fit through those openings. I did have a small midas blenny fit through my eggcrate but it wasn't as large as any of my fairy wrasses. My eggcrate doesn't seem to block very much light from my MHs. If you take the eggcrate off does your tank get visibly brighter? I can't tell the difference on my tank.

Yeah, wrasses have a bad reputation for jumping, especially when kept with bully tankmates. We put about 6 different wrasses in our 180store display reef over the last 8 months and one by one they were chased out of the tank vertically by our two watanabe angels. And I have found fairy wrasses living in the sump of our store for over two months! And yes, they will be able to fit thru egg crates.

At this point my tank is only a FOWLR, so blocking some light isn't as big of a factor as it for most of you

I've always had the better safe than sorry approach to the tank and don't want to find a fish on the floor

I hadnt even thought about using screen door screen...maybe I'll give that a try

Any other ideas ?

Wrasses are like houdini in that if there is a way out, they will find it. So, if you have an open tank, it would be best to block off the top or your wrasses will be carpet surfing eventually.

Wrasses are amateurs compared to Midas Blennies and Jawfish for jumping. I have an open topped tank and do not keep any wrasses in it for just that reason anymore. Had a beautiful , healthy leopard for 1.5 years that dissapeared suddenly and I found him wedged under the power strips behind my stand a month later :(
