Wrasse was stuck to Vortech - Need advice

Stumped

New member
I woke up today to find my wrasse stuck to the outside of my Vortech mp10. I got him into QT ASAP, but obviously some damage was done. He's breathing heavily, pale in colouration, and showing what I presume to be bruising (dark splotches). Is there anything else that can be done? Is recovery from such an injury possible? Currently he's propped himself semi-upright in QT against some macroalgae I put in there with him and the lights are off.

Unfortunatly most times when a fish gets stuck to a powerhead the fish is sick to begin with and is the reason he is stuck. While the powerhead may cause damage as well i would think you have another issue with the fish going on.Since he is in qt now i am not sure what else you can do but watch him and hope he recovers as medicating would prob be fatal at this point and you need to hope he can recover then try and determine if the fish has issues outside of the powerhead incident.Hth

Thanks for the quick reply. I should've specified in my original post that the wrasse is a Wetmorella sp. and he has never appeared to be that prolific a swimmer. I'm not sure if that's common to that type of wrasse, because there doesn't seem to be a ton of info available on them regarding their swimming habits. He wasn't showing any signs of sickness prior to this so hopefully there is some chance he will recover.

I'll keep him in QT and just observe him for any changes.

I'll wish you the best of luck. Wetmorella is very timid as far as wrasses go so it's gonna be tough on the little guy for sure.
I had a Flame Angel that got stuck to my Tunze 6100. He did not look good at all when I found him. He actually made a very good recovery and was gaining weight when he mysteriously died a few months later.

Just a bit of an update. He's got some of his colour back (still a bit pale with some bruising), but he's swimming again and luckily none of his fins were damaged so I'm hoping he will be able to make a full recovery.

yes indeed, good luck on your continued efforts to bring him back to health. What are you feeding him now? If you dont already you may want to soak his foods in some vitamin supplement like selcon. Might make his recovery even faster.

I'm feeding him a mix of mussel/prawn/scallop soaked in Kent Zoe. He seems to be improving steadily and the main concern right now is that the area where he appears to have lost some scales (3-4 probably) doesn't become infected and that they grow back. The scales seem to have lifted and/or fallen off from the area where bruising was prominent. I'm guessing that was also the side where he was stuck to the Vortech. Anyway, I'll keep this thread updated until he hopefully has made his full recovery. I appreciate the help and concern from everyone.

With that diet I would think he'll make quite a speedy recovery.
My fish should be so spoiled.

Do keep us updated.

same happened to my copper band butterfly. When i was feeding black worms to the tank it got stuck to the side of the mp40. I was there to let it free so it lived to see 3 more days. 3 days later when i got home from work it was stuck to the mp40 again but i wasn't there to free it.

It has been a couple of days, how is he doing now?

I'd say he's doing well thus far. No real progress since my last update, but he continutes to eat and swim normally. He still has the discolouration where he lost those few scales, but other than that you cant really tell the incident even occurred. Thanks for the concern.

That doesnt surprise me at all. I have the MP10 and the I've seen the MP20 running before and both have a ton of power. So I can only imagine how strong the MP40 is. Sorry to hear about the CBB though, those are beautiful fish and it must have been a terrible sight.

When my wrasse comes out of QT I'll be turning the power way down and making sure I set night mode to come on after the lights are off. Previously I hadn't even used the night mode feature, but I think there's a good chance he was trapped before the lights came on simply because he didn't notice the vortech until it was too late. He never had any problems avoiding it (even on stronger settings) during the day. So I'll play it safe and give that a try.

Well unfortunately I woke up to a sad sight this morning. When I checked the tank I saw that he had died sometime in the night. I'm guessing the internal damage done was more severe than the outward signs indicated. I'm quite disappointed as he was a great fish and it really looked like he would make it. He was swimming normally and eating like a pig so I really don't have any other idea what else it could have been. Thanks for all the concern everyone showed, I'm upset such a promising recovery turned out this way.

Truely sorry to hear.
Perhaps there was something else responsible all along that led to the incident in the first place and more than likely not much could have been done. You can never tell at times.

I mean it's definitely impossible to rule that out, but everything has been pretty stable in that tank for a long time. His tank mates were a Midas blenny, a Helfrich's firefish, and a neon goby and there is zero aggression in the tank. No one has shown any signs of disease (ich, flukes, etc.), but I'll definitely keep an eye out.

Ah, so sorry to hear that. Just take pride in the fact that you tried what you could to nurse him back to health and that he must, like you say, have had something going on internally that you just couldnt help.

If there was something wrong with him hopefully it was just isolated to him and nothing he could pass on to tankmates. I dont think we ever sad what kinda of wrasse he was or how long you had had him?

Best of luck,
Matt
