WSM pair are spawning!

All of my clown fry are gone:( I will try again this weekend.

But believe it or not I still have 4 to 5 Chromis left alive. I am amazed! These fry were barely bigger than rots when hatched and yet they are still living and now appear to be eating rots. They are still not identifiable. I did get some pictures though. I will post tomorrow. They aren't much but maybe someone will be able to confirm they are Chromis.

Just keep trying, you'll get there

good luck

It has been a little while since I updated. I had another hatch Sunday night and tonight(the end of day 4) I have 4 fry alive. Better than none :mixed:

I have been struggling with Phyto. I went the route of prepared phyto instead of culturing my own and now am wishing that I hadn't. When I got rots for Reed Mariculture, they came with a bottle of RG Complete. It did not last as long as I had expected it to. So I purchased some powdered from Seahorse Source, they told me it would last a year. Well after 1 week it is half gone. I only have two buckets of rots going -it's not like I am running some sort of rotifer factory :headwalls:

Well I am now getting the powdered mix from Aquafauna. Much better price and quantity. And am also going to start my own culture this weekend. I am waiting on the F/2.

ON TO THE PICs

I like live phyto. While it takes a bit of work and dedication to keep going, the advantages of live outweigh the negatives for me. Though even going the live route, I always keep some of Reeds algae pastes on hand as an emergency back up.

What are the benefits of using live over pastes? Do you use F/2 or something else? What types do you culture?

The two big advantages, overfeeding live phyto won't lead to ammonia spikes and degraded water quality, and in larval rearing tanks live "greenwater" has that same advantage and will even absorb some ammonia as a food source while the lights are on ;) Yes, Guillards f/2 is the media of choice. It's not only sufficient for rearing phyto, but it's also designed around providing adequate nutrition for larval fish rearing :) As for types, T-Iso and Nanno are my preferences, fed 50/50 to the rots. T-Iso is nutritionally superior, and Nanno (while adequate but not as good as Iso) is very good for rots. You can rear rots on either one, but the 50/50 mix seems to provide better rot growth and more stable rot cultures. If I had to choose just one, it would be the Iso. However, the Iso is a bit more demanding to culture...basically it's just less forgiving of poor technique or poor sanitation. Hence the popularity of just using Nanno by many hobbyists...it's more forgiving.
