Good advice there from Shawn... Then, once you decide on a camera, you can save a lot of money by purchasing from an online retailer. I have purchased cameras from eCost.com, TigerDirect.com, Buy.com and Amazon.com (as well as eBay but that is riskier)
If you buy online you can avoid paying sales tax and many of them have free shipping.

I have not priced or been to Loomis in a while but I do recall when I bought a my old Rebel a few years back they were cheaper than Best Buy and Circuit City but a bit more than online so might be worth looking there since I think it's pretty local I think. For me I find it worth paying a little more for a store with good service and advice on purchases such as this.

If Loomis is that reasonably priced then it sounds like a great place to purchase from since they are local and if there are any issues you can go there to speak with a real human in person.

I have only been to a camera-specific shop a few times and the prices were close to double the online prices. I believe it was a Ritz camera. I usually go for a ProSumer SLR-style (not true SLR) digital camera and spend roughly $400 on a nice camera and then add the accessories as I can afford them. I try to stick with models that have threaded lenses or a removable lens tube where you can add telephoto or wide angle/macro lenses.

Yeah I was pleasently suprised the first time I priced something out there. They are not the average chain store, locally owned and have been in the same storefront for over 50 years. And the people there were just as much about their cameras as all of us are about our tanks.

Didnt see a link on thier site currently, as I think they might be changing it around, but google found this

camera prices

To the best of my knowledge all the current models of higher end namebrand cameras have the exact same price give or take a few bucks everywhere. The way you get a better price is to by the exact same camera but without the US warranty. It is called a gray market camera. The mail order places dont tell you that. It is the same camera but nikon or cannon etc will not honor the warranty in the us. The place you bought it from online will most likely fix it for you. The US models have US in their serial number.

Where do you find a Gray Market Camera?

Hi,

A lot of the mail order companies will offer both a US warranty or a Gray market warranty. Places like B&H or Adorama offer gray market warranties. If you buy locally like Target or Best Buy to my knowledge they only offer US warranties.

People are almost giving away Nikon digital camera bodies that were more than $1000 a few years ago.A d70 body can be found on craigslist or ebay for cheap if you are patient. You could find one with a cheap lense and it would have more capabilty than you would be able to use for quite some time.Best feature is that you can buy quality lenses and up grade the camera body as new models are available.Digital camera picture quality is all about the size of the detecorr and the quality of the lense.
Digital cameras that the lense can not be changed have vecome very good but do not allow an upgrade path.
