WTB JBJ Auto Top Off

I agree... I am setting up the $20 DIY with 2 float switches (1 safety switch incase the first one fails..) from ebay ($15) 10 feet of tubing from lowes ($2) and 6ft extension cord also from lowes ($2) Plus you need a bucket and water ;)

O and of course a pump but luckily I just upgraded my pump so the old one will work just fine for this setup (doesn't need to be powerful at all...)

Google it for instructions... or PM me I might be able to put it into more words...

P.s. The guy who sells them on eBay is a horrible eBay seller (IMO).. Only combines shipping if you Buy it now for more $$ which defeats the purpous.. and does not respond to e-mails... and added a $.50 insurance after I told him twice I did not want insurance ((Auction says "optional" but in the invoice he sent me it says "required")it's not the .50 its the principle..) He will be getting 2 negative feedbacks from me...

BTW sorry to hijack your thread :D I needed to vent...

I wanted one too and did some price shopping. A brand new JBJ top-off costs only about $69 from an on-line store and you can have MD price match it if you want to get it right away. I think the 50-dollar home-made one from autotopoff.com is over-priced.

i get 60% of my business from ebay, and its buyers like you who screw it up for me, leaving me negatives over a lousy amount of $1 or because they felt like they overpaid for shipping.

We ebay sellers already sell at rock bottom prices, thats why we can't combine shipping some items.
You have to look at it this way, we sell the product at $2.00, and charge you $5.00 for shipping. But the store is selling it for $10.

So say its $14.00 total for 2 items shipped, it's still cheaper then $20.00 at the store, but you guys are still complaining about the money. It just doesn't make sense. If you don't agree to a seller's terms, it simple. DONT BUY FROM HIM.

Sorry for the OT, i had to vent when i saw this post. especially since the new Ebay policy's totally screw the sellers now, my 15% fee discounted rates are all gone now and I'm paying a couple hundred extra in fees just because they FELT like they overpaid and gave me a negative.

oh yeah, i can't buy my chiller this month:mad2:

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been looking at the DIY projects on google and forums, but they seem to be lacking in the failure protection. I'll look into the MarineDepot price match. I'm going to Beijing this summer and will need one of these by July. So a used one would be nice if someone doesn't want their's.

Simple solution that will solve all your problems.................Stop selling on Ebay!!!

If a seller lists insurance as optional in the body of the auction & then makes it mandatory during checkout, it's bad business practices. Integrity is all you have when selling items online, because there is no "face to face" relationship between the customer & the seller. Once the integrity is lost, there's nothing left......

If I stop selling on ebay for extra money, how am I going to make money to buy all my little reef toys ;) & my comment was directed towards you, just more of a rant.

Same scenario with face to face, if there were 2 stores right next to each other selling the same thing.

Guy A: shitty attitude, full warranty and cost $200.00
Guy B: professional, full warranty and cost $300.00

who do you buy from? when you try to save every dollar you can, you have to make sacrifices.

You bought a ATO for $20.00 instead of $65.00 for a JBJ. IMO I think that $45.00 saving would warrant enough satisfaction. I don't condone his behavior, I just feel for the guy knowing he'll be paying that extra $100+ in fees over the next several months because he tried to sell something cheap and tried to make a extra buck. If he can't cover those extra fees, he'll stop selling em and people can just go back to buying expensive ATOs.

If you felt his seller practices were that bad, you should have just ended the transaction there. A invoice was sent to you, however no money was sent to him.

The ball was in your court and you decided to play knowing full well what the conditions were.

Personally I will pay extra to "support" the companies & people that are willing to take care of thier customers and have treated me right in the past. I can't speak for others though........

Remember this is a hobby where you get what you pay for..... ;)

I've heard all kinds of accidents caused by electronic ATO failures which lead me to believe a mechanical float valve design might be the simplest and safest way to go. Or at least you can get an electronic one backed by a reputable company.

I quit shopping on ebay a while ago after only 5 to 6 trial experiences. That is a highly competitive market place where quite a few sellers gave in on their integrity and customer service to competitive prices. Frankly, I don't think the prices for brand new stuff on ebay are actually any cheaper than those of other on-line stores (I'm talking about exact same products).

scrapz, most of the time, the price is not the deciding factor of customers' purchasing behavior. It is only one of the considerations. Of course, it also varies among different ranges of prices. Maybe you should consider going back to school and take more classes such as Consumer Behavior.

i never said price was the deciding factor, however the person i quoted is person B. they chose to pay cheaper for a product, knowing the shady ways of the seller upfront.

What I posted was not how I conduct my business, it was merely an expression of what I felt the situation looked like.

I personally pay the extra $10-20 dollars for better support. I also shop at my LFS even though his prices are higher, I know he'll be there if any problems arise.
