I want to change out the substrate in my nano. I want to used live sand fron an existing tank as not to have to cycle again. I was going to buy some from BMcCoy but things went bad with the sand he had so I'm seeking some other sorce. I'd like to get about 20-30 pounds.

Or am I wrong in thinking I would have a cycle happen al over if I used the store bought kind?

You shouldn't have a cycle from the new, dry sand but if you stirr up the old and release some junk that may be a differant matter. You gonna take everything out or just try to siphon out the old?

the old is a black gravel type called black beuaty, it came with the tank when i traded for it. I'll have to scoop it out. If the commercial bagged live sand will not couse a cycle I'll try it. I have about 50 pnds of live rock will this help it not to cycle as well.

you should be ok with the live rock... thats where most of your bacteria will be. You should not have to cycle from scratch although you might see a quick spike if you have a heavy stocked system... just think about those bare bottom tanks -- they dont have sand, the rock holds the bio.

You will have some die off in transit so watch your params if you add it right in. i would put it in a bucket with a small PH for a few days to let the bio stabalize again and not take a chance on a big spike. :)
